Thunderbrook is a tributary of the Exploits River and a favourite
swimming area of the locals. To find the cache you will follow the
main trail from the TCH to the Upper Falls at Thunder Brook. If you
are taking children or pets, keep them close as you will be hiking
a trail that runs along an extremely high and sometimes slippery
bank.
As you drive west on the TCH, you will see a gravel area (not the
gravel pit) immediately before the Thunderbrook Bridge. Park your
car here. You will notice the remains of an old building right next
to your car. When I was a child, this was a lovely building that
housed a night club called the Oasis and there was a huge parking
lot. Today the alders have taken over the parking lot and only the
stairs and foundation remain of the Oasis.
Follow the main trail past the Oasis for about 5 minutes. You will
come to Thunderbrook; this spot is the wading area commonly used
for young children and weaker swimmers. You will see that the trail
continues up hill to your right. Follow the trail. You will pass
the magestic first falls (to your left). Keep following the
trail.
As you hike on up the slopes, you will hear a second falls up
ahead. As you come close to the second (Upper) falls(a favourite
swimming area for the more adventurous swimmers/divers), you will
notice a fork in the trail. At this point you stop following trails
and forge into the bush to the right (away from Thunderbrook) for
about 15-20 metres. You will be walking around and over fallen
evergreen trees.
The cache is a green painted koolaid container hanging waist high
off a stump of a fallen tree.
At the time of hiding the cache, it contained a notebook and
pencils, a Canada Pen, several erasers, a plastic butterfly,
marbles and a Port-aux-Basques Winter Carnival Button.
Though the cache is at a height so it can be found all year round,
you will likely need snowshoes in the winter. Be careful in all
seasons as the rocks along the way can be quite slippery.

May 7, 2009 by macdude (158 found) Used to swim here when I was little, and then took my own kids here, when they were small. Enjoyed the walk , done a little bushwacking but not to bad . Didn't see to many beer bottles only one in a tree. Trail a little muddy in places but wasn't to hard to get around. Signed log book left six golf tees, and a key chain travel game.
