Kurut ovat jääkauden loppuvaiheessa noin 8000 vuotta sitten muodostuneita uria tunturimaastossa. Jäätiköiden vetäytyminen ja niiden sulavedet ovat synnyttäneet nämä pitkät ja jyrkkäreunaiset kanjonit muutoin useimmiten loivarinteisten tunturien reunamille.
Kansallispuiston rajalta alkava luontopolku kulkee Ristikurun ja Iisakkipään huipun kautta Pääsiäiskurulle ja palaa tunturin eteläpuolitse lähtöpisteeseensä. Kuuden kilometrin lenkki on maastoon hyvin merkitty ja melko helppokulkuinen. Talvisin se on lumikenkäreitti.
Reitin varrella on opastauluja, joissa geologian professori L. Jokipuuku esittelee alueen geologisia muodostumia. Jos olet liikkeellä keväällä tai kesällä, huomaa puurajan alapuolella sijaitsevan Ristikurun runsas kasvillisuus ja vertaa sitä rajan yläpuolella olevan Pääsiäiskurun karuuteen. Gorges of this area were created due to effects of thawing water of the last ice age about 8000 years ago. The thawed water was guided in between two slopes to the rupture point of the rock, taking with the loose earth and forming a deep gorge.
The nature trail leaves from the edge of national park. It leads via Ristikuru (Cross Gorge) and Iisakkipää fell top to Pääsiäiskuru (Easter Gorge). The total length of circular walk is about 6 km. Terrain is relatively easy and path is well-marked. During winter it's a snowshoe track.
There are information boards along the route where professor of geology S T Claus gives you a presentation of sights. The English, German and French transcripts are included.
If you happen to be there in Spring or Summer, pay attention on lush vegetation in Ristikuru which is located below tree limit. When in Pääsiäiskuru, compare the vegetation. You'll notice how much less green there is because this arid gorge is above tree limit. All answers can be found at Pääsiäiskuru.
