Joensuun kaupungintalo sijaitsee ydinkeskustassa joen varrella.
Vuonna 1914 valmistuneen kaupungintalon on suunnittelut arkkitehti
Eliel Saarinen, jonka tunnetuimpia rakennuksia lienee Helsingin
rautatieasema. Kaupungintalon arkkitehtuurissa on piirteitä
kansallisromantiikasta ja myöhäisjugendista.
Vuonna 1966 Joensuun kaupunginteatterin näyttämöltä alkunsa
saanut tulipalo lähes tuhosi koko rakennuksen. Palossa
vaurioituivat pahoin juhlasali, ullakko ja torni, mutta
toimisto-osa kärsi vain vesivahinkoja. Tulipalon jälkeen rakennusta
korjattiin ja se restauroitiin kokonaan vuonna 1998.
Nykyisin kaupungintalossa toimii mm. kaupunginteatteri ja
teatteriravintola. Kaupungintalon tornista, Elielin Silmästä,
avautuu hienot näköalat Joensuun kaupungin ylle.

The town hall of Joensuu stands by the river in the centre of
Joensuu. It has been designed by well known Finnish architect Eliel
Saarinen and it was completed in 1914. One of the most famous works
of Mr. Saarinen is the railway station of Helsinki and it resembles
the Joensuu town hall. The architecture of Joensuu's town hall
exemplifies Finnish national romantic and late jugend styles.
In year 1966 a fire that began from the stage of Joensuu city
theatre almost destroyed the building. Fortunately the office parts
of the building were spared from the fire. After the fire the town
hall was repaired and it was completely restored to it's original
appearance in year 1998.
Besides being a town hall the city theatre of Joensuu still has
it's plays in the building and there is also a restaurant. You can
visit in the tower of town hall (also called the Eliel's eye) for a
beautiful view over the city of Joensuu.
