Forestil dig følgende situation:
Det er i skolen. 3. klasse har matematik og – lidt gammeldags – læreren har kaldt lille Peter op til tavlen, for at han skal vise at han har styr på regning. Læreren spørger lille Peter: ” Nå, hvad er så 7 + 2”?. Lille Peter begynder at tælle på fingrene – og når frem til resultatet: ”9”!
”Det er rigtigt”! Siger læreren. ” Men du skal lære at regne det ud, uden at tælle på fingrene”! ”Hvad er så 4 + 3”? spørger læreren. Lille Peter tæller igen på fingrene og når frem til: ”7”! ” Det er rigtigt, Peter. Men nu skal du altså holde op med at tælle på fingrene! Put begge hænder i lommerne og fortæl mig, hvad er 5 + 5”? Lille Peter putter hænderne i bukselommerne – og tænker sig om. Så siger han: ”11”!

Imagine the following situation:
In school. 3.th grade are enjoying math and – a bit old fashioned – the teacher, has called little Peter up to the blackboard, to show his understanding of aritmics. The teacher ask little Peter: ”ok, what is 7 + 2”? Little Peter starts to count on his fingers – and answers:”9”! ”Yes – that is correct” Says the teacher. ”But you'll have to stop counting on your fingers. What is then 4 + 3”? again the teacher asks. Little Peter – again – count fingers, and answers: ”7”! ”That is correct, Peter. But stop using your fingers! Put your hands in your pockets, and answer me: What is 5 + 5”? Little Peter puts his hands in his pockets – and, after a bit of thinking, answers: ”11”!
