Sjølundstårnet
I 1888 fik Næstved
sit første vandværk beliggende i Kompagnistræde.
i 1979.

The
Sjølund Tower
In 1888 Næstved
got the first waterworks located in Kompagnistræde. On the top of
"Sandbjerget" right east of the city a water tank was build, from
where the water was lid down to the taps in the city below.
Since then a small tower has been constructed on top of the water
tank, locating a small platform just above the tree tops, opening
up for a nice view overlooking the city "skyline". In 1914 this
water tank was supplemented with another water tank on top of
"Åsen".
In 1938 a new waterworks was build on "Åsen", and at the same time
a real water tower was build on top of "Åsen", designed by the
architect Johannes Tidemand-Dal.
As a result of a competition among the citizen, a jury selected
the name of the new water tower to be "Sjølundstårnet". At the time
where "Sjølundstårnet" was taken into operation, the old water
tanks at "Åsen" and "Munkebakken" ("Sandbjerget") was closed
down.
By paying a small fee the public had entrance to the tower,
experiencing a spectacular view overlooking a wide area of the
southern Zealand. For the moment the entrance to the tower is
closed due to unfinished work on the communication installations.
Hopefully the tower will be open to public, when this work has been
finished.
Until 1967 the "Sjølundstårnet" was the only water tower of
Næstved, where a new one (the mushroom) was constructed at
Ringvejen.
Both the waterworks, "Åsen" and "Sjølundstårnet" was taken out of
service in 1979.
Please
secure the lid safely on to the box!!
