CAGY Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Blue Canary: Well it appears that the container has been geosnatched. I wish I could come up with a decent location to hide another container, but the new fence has eliminated all the locations I would consider. Maybe one day in the future I will spot something I think is appropriate.

Geocache Description:

Cache is in a public park and should be wheelchair accessable. No climbing on the display is required.

This grand old lady operated on the Columbus & Greenville Railway (CAGY). Unfortunately she has been neglected and abused since being placed on display.

  • Engine 178 is a 4-6-0 steam engine built by the Rogers Locomotive Company under builders number 5609 in August 1900 for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad as their engine 187. The M&O renumbered her to 178 in 1912 before selling her to the Columbus & Greenville Railway in 1923. She was rebuilt with 63 inch drivers that replaced the original 57 inch ones in 1948 and retired in 1951.
  • Baggage & Mail car 30 was originally Louisville & Nashville #156.
  • Coach 602 was originally Mobile & Ohio 259 and later used in work train service on the C&G as number B-41. This car was acquired by C&G in the 1920's.
  • Coach 605 was originally Southern 1331 and later used in work train service on the C&G as number B-46. This car was acquired by C&G in the 1920's.
  • Caboose 503 was originally Southern X893 and purchased by C&G in 1915.
  • The train sits on 60 pound rail (to the yard) that came off the C&G. The rail was made in 1888 and is some of the original rail from the railroad. While none of this rail is still in service on the main line, a few side tracks and some of the tracks at the roundhouse in Columbus still have this rail in service, serving as it always has for over 118 years.
  • The train order signal and the derail are supposed to have also come from the C&G, but where is currently unknown. Semaphore signals and derails such as these were last made in the 1940s and these two are probably much older.
  • A monument to Adam Tonquin Stovall, a former president of the Columbus & Greenville is also in display. This monument was placed by the employees of the railroad at the Columbus depot in 1939, one year after his death . When the display was created at Propst Park and the depot sold, the monument was moved to the park.
