Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the site of the Perano Whaling Station near the entrance to Tory Channel. Specialist equipment (a boat) is required to access the cache site. It should also be noted that there are strong tidal currents in Tory Channel so a human propelled craft (such as a kayak or row boat) is probably not appropriate.

This cache is placed on a DOC administered site, accessible only by boat. The surrounding property is privately owned.
The terrain rating for this cache reflects the need for specialist equipment (a boat). Once at the cache site the terrain would be rated as 1.5.

In its life the Perano Whaling station processed a total of 3450 humpbacks, 266 sperm whales, 5 blue whales, 4 sei whales and 1 fin whale.

This was the last whaling station in New Zealand - it closed in December 1964 due to economic reasons, related to the decline in whale numbers (blamed mostly on foreign whaling ships), and so ended 174 years of carnage - the history of commercial whaling in New Zealand waters.

The whaling station is quite an interesting place to visit and would make a good place for a picnic.

Original cache contents - postit notes as a logbook (I wasn't planning to place the cache but a friend talked me into it and agreed to help maintain it), 2 pencils and a pack of plastc teaspoons as swaps.

I have marked the cache as "public transport available" as there are a number of different charter and water taxi firms available in the area. I've also maked the "may require a fee" as they charge for their services. Note that access to the cache site itself is free. The cheapest way to access it is via a privately owned boat.
