The first cache is a micro cache, well hidden, but less than 10
feet from the main path. Therefore one needs to prepare to be
occupied looking at the nearby marsh, turtle pond, or looking for a
woodpecker, even in the middle of the winter if some Muggles come
along. The coordinates for the second cache are to be found in the
first cache.
Please be careful to hide the first cache as you found it.
The second cache is a 1 gallon plastic jar spray painted brown
and contains log, pencil hopefully numerous other items that kids
and adults would enjoy. It also has plenty of space for additional
materials. A geocaching logo is taped to the bottom of the
cache.
The area has changed significantly since spring. Heavy rains
this spring (2008) have brought considerably more foliage to the
area. Grass that has been trampled has recovered.
The "island" has a long history that probably included Lewis and
Clark. An old CCC Camp is on the island with information on the
1930s program to employ men during the depression, and the items
that they built in the immediate area, including a land "bridge
from the mainland to the island. Later there was a golf course and
I am told that there was both a Boy Scout Camp and a Girl Scout
Camp on the island. All of these sites were abandoned when the
Little Bend Dam, some 60 miles downstream near Fort Thompson was
constructed filling Lake Sharpe (part of the Missouri River) that
then flooded part of the Island. Now marshes exist where golfers
use to drive their golf balls down the fairways.
There is a foundation structure that can be seen on Google Earth
at N44 degree 20.303 minutes; W 100 degrees 16.145 minutes that
could be reminents of the Boy Scout Camp or was it part of the Golf
Course? I expect to provide an update when I get more accurate
information including giving the coordinates for the CCC Camp and
the Boys and Girl Scout Camps.
A nominal State Park Fee is required to access the area. See the
following website for details: (visit link)
Hunting is permitted in the area. My impression is that it is
primarily deer hunting. See the following website for more
information: (visit link)
Congratulations to Familygeo FTF.
