Geocache Description:

A relatively easy mountain cache!

Rocky Whelan was a rather notorious bushranger type who often based himself at this cave/overhang, and ranged widely on the mountain doing his ungentlemanly deeds. Apparently he shot travellers after robbing them and eventually confessed to five murders prior to his execution in 1855.

Rocky Whelans Cave is a 5 minute walk along Woods Track from Pinnacle Road. You can park in the area nearby but be careful walking back around the corner to get to the track – the road is narrow and cars can whiz around the corner quite quickly. The walk is short but a little bit of scrambling is required. The cave also provides a good resting/lunch spot if you plan a longer walk around the many interconnecting tracks in this area. Note also the little back entrance and views from on top.

You may also wish to walk just 350m further along Woods Track to Radford’s monument which marks the spot where George Radford died in a race from the Post Office to the Pinnacle in 1903. (There is a cache nearby there listed on the Geocaching Australia site too).

This cache is a black container with clip locks, please replace clips securely so that moisture doesn't get in.
