Geocache Description:

Jim Barnett Reserve - Easy Walk

The Waotu Bush was known by Maori as He Waotu -Tahi-nga-rakau (the tall bush that stands alone). During the 1886 Eruption of Tongariro, the stand escaped destruction due to the nearby low hill which stopped the ash and lava flow.

Much of the original 1000 Hectares of bush was logged in the 20th century and there were 5 mills operating in the area at one time.

Part of the track follows an old Tramway and the stumps of old trees can still be seen.

An enormous old Totara Tree grows beside the Totara Loop Track. It probably survived the logging era because its unusual growth form gave it a low timber value. It is estimated that this tree is nearly 1000 yrs old.

Main Track circuit = 30 mins
Totara Track = 15 mins.

Tawa is the predominant species but there are others which are marked with metal signs.

At the start of the track is a small letter box where you can 'Borrow" a laminated copy of the trail and all stations on the way. The ancient Totara is Station 9.

Bird life is amazing - very tame robins are present
