Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

This cache is a Project APE cache, a cache hidden with permission for the Planet of the Apes Promotion in 2001. Moun10Bike and Jeremy were the original covert placers of the cache, but Moun10Bike has since taken over complete ownership. When the cache was placed, it contained a torch from the movie. The description in green below was the original description for the cache:

Project APE's success continues as our movement continues to grow beyond what we ever thought possible. For this mission we are heading back to the Northwest, where we are sure to keep our momentum going. Our confidence as a group is growing, but don't let our past success blind us to the constant threat we face. We still hear and receive daily reports of undercover federal agents stalking our team. Remain diligent and stay alert. Remember, anyone you don't know is a possible enemy to our mission.

Below is our field agent's report for the mission at hand:

"This mission is not going to be an easy one. The hike will not be as scenic as some of the other missions, but you'll be on a great adventure. You'll need to wear a good pair of waterproof boots, or an old pair of sneakers. A flashlight is necessary, even if you go during the day.

This is a creepy, historical and very cool spot. Be ready for a unique hike, but beware because in parts you'll be sitting ducks for the authorities. So move fast and keep a good eye on your back to make sure you're not tailed. Good luck!"

Cache Details:
This cache can be accessed using two primary routes starting from two separate tralheads: the Hyak Trailhead and the Annette Lake Trailhead. The coordinates for these trailheads are available in the additional waypoints below. I have posted detailed maps of the cache location that show these starting points along with the trails that lead from them to the cache (JPEG [6.6 MB download] or PDF [6.5 MB download]). In addition, If you own a Garmin GPS, you can use my Northwest Trails custom mapset to load the details of each route to your receiver.
  • The John Wayne Pioneer Trail
This route begins from the Iron Horse Trailhead at Hyak, which is accessed off of Exit 54 on Interstate 90. The trailhead is an expansive parking lot operated by the State Parks with restroom facilities. No parking permit is required. This trailhead is the major access point for the 2-1/4 mile long Snoqualmie Tunnel, the feature for which the cache is named and through which you must travel to access the cache. Please note that the tunnel is closed each year between roughly Nov. 1 and May 1 due to the dangerous icicles that form inside from seep water. You can learn the status of the tunnel by calling (509) 656-2230.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 6 miles (10 k)
    Elevation Gain: Minimal

UPDATE Jan. 31, 2009: The Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed until further notice due to deteriorating conditions within. DO NOT use the tunnel to access the cache until the tunnel is officially reopened.
  • The Annette Lake Trail
If the Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed, then this is your best access point for the cache. The Annette Lake Trailhead is located near the Asahel Curtis Picnic Area off of Interstate 90 at Exit 47. Follow the Annette Lake Trail up to the Iron Horse Trail (old railroad grade), then follow that trail east to the cache. Note that a Northwest Forest Pass day pass or annual pass is needed to park at this trailhead.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 4 miles (6.4 k)
    Elevation Gain: About 575 feet (175 m)

Found this a couple days ago but had to save it for 1000. Very excited, First leg of the Northwest triad. Next week off to the original cache and then start groveling to get an invite to the Lily Pad. Had a great day and picked up our oldest cache on the Iron Horse. I even had a chance to place a new cache up near Snoqualmie Pass. Checkout the 'Wandering Ape #GC24P0T" Thanks for keeping this cache up. Love the Puget Sound.

What a fantastic day to hike this. I have to confess, I enjoyed the 1st half of the hike with all the switchbacks up the side of the mountain almost more than discovering the APE cache.

There was a light sprinkling for snow on the ground and it looked like someone had used the trail the same day, I was hoping to run into a fellow geocacher but no luck.

Last note: I may have seriously overlook TB's and coins but this is what we found:

Amygems does... coin
Mision #9... coin

I added:
Tigenteen Express TB
City Burro TB
Travel Bug Tag TB

Very cool place. Thanks for keeping this going. I just had eye surgery and my husband led me all the way. We spotted the original cache right away. We wanted to beat the crowds as the mega event is going to take cachers up there in July. Were we also able to catch some caches up there and place one.

This makes part two on our trek to achieving the Triad!
Took a wrong turn when we hit the railroad grade, went another half mile before turning back and making the correct turn.
What a great cache. Moving some of the trackables south.
