This cache is a Project APE cache, a cache hidden with permission for the Planet of the Apes Promotion in 2001. Moun10Bike and Jeremy were the original covert placers of the cache, but Moun10Bike has since taken over complete ownership. When the cache was placed, it contained a torch from the movie. The description in green below was the original description for the cache:

Project APE's success continues as our movement continues to grow beyond what we ever thought possible. For this mission we are heading back to the Northwest, where we are sure to keep our momentum going. Our confidence as a group is growing, but don't let our past success blind us to the constant threat we face. We still hear and receive daily reports of undercover federal agents stalking our team. Remain diligent and stay alert. Remember, anyone you don't know is a possible enemy to our mission.

Below is our field agent's report for the mission at hand:

"This mission is not going to be an easy one. The hike will not be as scenic as some of the other missions, but you'll be on a great adventure. You'll need to wear a good pair of waterproof boots, or an old pair of sneakers. A flashlight is necessary, even if you go during the day.

This is a creepy, historical and very cool spot. Be ready for a unique hike, but beware because in parts you'll be sitting ducks for the authorities. So move fast and keep a good eye on your back to make sure you're not tailed. Good luck!"

Cache Details:
This cache can be accessed using two primary routes starting from two separate tralheads: the Hyak Trailhead and the Annette Lake Trailhead. The coordinates for these trailheads are available in the additional waypoints below. I have posted detailed maps of the cache location that show these starting points along with the trails that lead from them to the cache (JPEG [6.6 MB download] or PDF [6.5 MB download]). In addition, If you own a Garmin GPS, you can use my Northwest Trails custom mapset to load the details of each route to your receiver.
  • The John Wayne Pioneer Trail
This route begins from the Iron Horse Trailhead at Hyak, which is accessed off of Exit 54 on Interstate 90. The trailhead is an expansive parking lot operated by the State Parks with restroom facilities. No parking permit is required. This trailhead is the major access point for the 2-1/4 mile long Snoqualmie Tunnel, the feature for which the cache is named and through which you must travel to access the cache. Please note that the tunnel is closed each year between roughly Nov. 1 and May 1 due to the dangerous icicles that form inside from seep water. You can learn the status of the tunnel by calling (509) 656-2230.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 6 miles (10 k)
    Elevation Gain: Minimal

UPDATE Jan. 31, 2009: The Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed until further notice due to deteriorating conditions within. DO NOT use the tunnel to access the cache until the tunnel is officially reopened.
  • The Annette Lake Trail
If the Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed, then this is your best access point for the cache. The Annette Lake Trailhead is located near the Asahel Curtis Picnic Area off of Interstate 90 at Exit 47. Follow the Annette Lake Trail up to the Iron Horse Trail (old railroad grade), then follow that trail east to the cache. Note that a Northwest Forest Pass day pass or annual pass is needed to park at this trailhead.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 4 miles (6.4 k)
    Elevation Gain: About 575 feet (175 m)

We picked a fine February day to capture the second leg of the Northwest Geo Triad and our 400th cache. For us, cache #300 was Groundspeak Heaquarters, and this one was #400. Logic dictates we will have to get the Original Stash for #500. Wish us luck!

We teamed up with maggi101 to find this famous cache. After getting our 399th down by the parking lot, we headed up the mountain. The hike was fun with lots of interesting things to discover around each bend. The two nine-year-old boys had a blast in the snow and playing their made up game, "Iron Horse", which seemed to involve a lot of sliding on the ice. The views were spectacular and the creek serene.

The cache itself was a great find and loaded to the brim with swag, though only a few trackables. We loved the PotA movie paraphernalia! I agree with maggi101 that there ought to be more geocache tie-ins for movies/books/video games. It seems like a perfect fit! Thanks to Moun10bike for keeping this rare cache alive!

Once we finished with the cache, we headed toward the tunnel just to see what we were missing. We really wish we could have come that way, but I suppose there are other tunnels that are still open. After finding the second oldest cache in the state, four tired geocachers headed back down the mountain. Though we only managed five caches, it was a great day! Thanks!

Well that I am able to easily travel to the APE cache is testament to the mild winter we're having. I thought the weather today was pretty fine for February, a few clouds, a little sun. Dogster and I checked out some of the theme stuff. Very cool stuff in the cache and thanks for keeping it up these years. Left a bug and coin. Mission Accomplished, we moved on to grab a few more caches while we were in the area.

This was awesome. We were invited along for a day with Team Peredox to hunt the historic APE for their 400th, and are incredibly thankful. Beyond the amazing hike up to get this (though we did lament the loss of the tunnel experience), the contents of the cache itself were just too killer. Would that there were more heavily themed caches like this to be found. Very few bugs and travellers remained in cache. Cal Bear, Library Lil, Hammer, and the two ape coins were all that were there to be found, so we added a couple more, and a Statue of Liberty pressed penny (just to remind you that you were home the whole time). I would have loved better weather to have allowed us to spend some time to go through all of the amazing Project APE materials inside the cache, and educate ourselves more to the coming threat. Thanks for the historic find, and grats to Team Peredox on #400!

Well the tunnel is closed but we managed to complete our mission. Team tinkering (sightunseen/my better half and me) left SoCal a few days ago on a random unplanned roadtrip and decided to make this one of our destinations. I haven't enjoyed a hike this much since.....I don't know when. The trails get pretty ice for a bit but this cali girl managed to make it in running shoes. :-) thanks to lovorca and the previous logs for the helpful advice. We might have to make another road trip to come back with friends. Thank you so much for keeping this one going. Now we are off to Groundspeak HQ and we would love to make it to Brazil for the other remaining A.P.E. cache. In the meantime, happy caching to all!!! :-)

p.s. Took red herring, left cal bear, library lil and mini hammer

As we are new to geocaching, we were doing some research over our vacation last week. Found out that one of the coveted original A.P.E. geocaches was still functioning close to our home. Had to go find this historic cache. Took our friend Ali and headed out to the woods from the city. Not exactly the easiest hike today since the packed snow had converted to ice along much of the trail....slow going on the way up and the way down. Beautiful scenery and cool historic value. Left Red Herring Geocoin. Grabbed Las Vegas micro geocoin. Thanks for keeping this cache alive for others to enjoy.
