Geocache Description:

One of many historical cemeteries in Rhode Island. Yes, I am aware of Groundspeak's cemetery policy. This cache is so far acceptable.

I'm not morbid but I do find these historical cemeteries very fascinating. Amazing how long they've been around. This particular cemetery is well kept and in a nice setting with a pleasant view of Barden Reservoir. This cache was visited by some folks from Groundspeak.

It is now possible to search the RI Historical Cemetery Database online or on a computer at the Rhode Island Historical Society for an ancestor buried anywhere in the state. The earliest gravestone in the database is 1647 for John Coggeshall, Sr., president of the colony of Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island Cemeteries Database project was begun in 1990 as a way to document and computerize the many historical cemeteries around the state. Originally, there were thought to be 200,000 inscriptions in 2500 cemeteries. Today, there are 3100 +/- cemeteries in Rhode Island. In 1990 there were 1862 registered historical cemeteries. So far, the current total is 2,833. It is estimated that there are 430,00 inscriptions, although several large modern cemeteries may take that total higher.

You will find the cache located in the exterior perimeter corner at the end of the wall in the photograph. It is not necessary to remove any stones in this lovely rock wall.
