GLS 24 Hour Marathon 4: At Your Whitby's End Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

northernpenguin: Well, the event has come and gone. Thanks to everyone that came out - it really is the people that make the event cache!

Just a quick reminder that, as I archive this listing, there are still a few Travel Bugs that are not accounted for. If you picked up a bug, please log your pickup on the geocaching website so the owners know where their bugs are.

See you all at next year's event!

Geocache Description:

The Fourth Annual 24 Hour Cache Machine - Whitby/Oshawa and Beyond.

We will begin the day at 8:00 AM at the Golden Griddle Restaurant in Whitby. There we shall pack in a hearty breakfast and swap stories of the past, present and even future 24 Hour Geocache adventures.

Once we're done eating (hopefully 9:00 AM), then we will set out and go caching for 24 Hours straight. Why? Because we can.

Naturally, the difficulty and terrain ratings reflect the caching after the meal. You will require a vehicle, or you will need to pair up with someone who is driving.

Please ensure you are properly prepared for this endeavor. We WILL NOT be stopping until 9:00 AM Sunday.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meal, or the cache machine... either will gain you a "smiley". The cache machine participants will depart at 9:00 AM I will keep this page up to date with the forum information, and the information from the official pages:

Important Information for the Caching Portion:
  • We will be leaving to find our first geocache at 9am sharp.
  • The first geocache to find will be determined .
  • Allow yourself plenty of driving time to get to the starting event , as there is always a strong chance that there will be traffic and it’s a long drive for most of us.
  • We won’t be stopping for food breaks, but we will try to squeeze in some quick 5 minute stops at a Tim Horton’s (or other suitable location) every so often, just in case people need a quick food/liquid fix or a washroom break.
  • Drivers should ensure that their vehicle is fully gassed at the start of the marathon, so we don’t run the risk of an empty tank.
  • No driving alone. Make sure you team up with at least one other person in your vehicle. The last thing we want is for someone to fall asleep at the wheel. A good setup would be a driver, a navigator and an extra passenger or two.
  • 24 hours+ is a long time to be awake. Make sure you get adequate sleep beforehand.
  • Have your GPS, PDA, etc loaded with all the waypoints, parking coordinates and routes beforehand, so we don’t waste having to enter numbers. All of this will be available a few days prior to the event.
  • When we find a cache, custom stickers will be stuck into the log book for the group and then we will all quickly sign it. no stories, unless it is really good.
  • The person that finds the cache, should also be the one to return it to its hiding spot. That person may also want to dump out the contents of the cache in case someone wanted to do a quick trade while the log book is being signed.
  • We are planning to do all caches on our route (whatever we get to in 24 hours). Caches will only be skipped, if we deem it to be unsafe or inappropriate to do at that specific time which we are in the area. So it will be a spur of the moment decision.
  • This event is not about numbers. Numbers lead to rushing, rushing leads to mistales, mistales lead to someone getting hurt. *"Mistales" used deliberately. Ask Keith
  • Lets make this a safe and fun event!

The 24 Hour Marathon routing will evolve as the event draws closer. Please watch this listing for changes as they occur.

Now is the time for people to start figuring out which vehicles they are riding in during the event! If you have room in your vehicle, consider carpooling in another person from your area. Be sure to leave room in your vehicle to accomodate others should a vehicle stop working during the event.

Drivers, please report who is riding in your vehicle and the capacity of your vehicle so we can keep the page updated and assist those who are still looking for a ride.
