What can be said for St. Patricks Day??
A day when everyone is Irish. A day when wearing green is required or you get a pinch. A day when consuming green beer by the gallon is a requirement, not a request. A day when the pour gallons of green vegatable dye into the Chicago River to color it green.
Why???
To honor the patron Saint of Ireland. Who was actually born in Britain (but whose counting that!). Taken as a prisoner at age 16 in a raid by Irish raiders, Patrick was held for 6 years. He turned religion for solace and became a devout Christian. He eventually escaped and returned to Britain, after having a vision from God. Another vision lead him to return to Ireland as a missionary.
As a priest and a missionary, Patrick incorporated many traditional rituals into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to wipeout the native Irish beliefs. As an example, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross. Patrick also meshed the Irish nature-based pagan religion into his teachings.
He even may have driven all of the snakes from Ireland, but that is a story for another time!
