Geocache Description:

A very simple multicache. The first two waypoints are drivebys, however you’ll need to visit them in order to find the final secret.

CO-GENERATION

Co-generation is the simultaneous production of two or more useful forms of energy from a single energy source. At Southdown, the fuel is natural gas and the energy produced is electricity and steam. The two gas turbine engines each drive a generator, producing electricity. The extremely hot exhaust gases, with some additional heating, produce steam which drives a third generator. Steam is also available for sale to industry.

Strategically located in the high growth Auckland urban area, Southdown is the country's most northern major power station and plays an important role in providing voltage support for the region. Southdown complements Mighty River Power's renewable hydro and geothermal energy sources and can be operated flexibly to help meet both peak and base-load demand as market conditions require.

The plant at Southdown uses natural gas to produce both electricity and steam (co-generation). Producing energy in this way is more efficient than using separate processes.
The steam by-product of the generation process is available as a heat source for other industrial uses.

Rising electricity demand in Auckland led to construction of the Southdown Co-generation facility in 1995, with the plant commissioned in December the following year.

The plant was the first combined heat and power (CHP) facility to be built following the deregulation of New Zealand’s electricity supply industry and was the first combined cycle station to be commissioned in New Zealand. Its location places it well away from residential areas but close to industrial customers.

Southdown commenced full co-generation production in September 1998. Mighty River Power acquired full ownership of the plant in December 2002.

The above co-ordinates are for the first waypoint. Geocachers could well claim they have contributed to the growth of this company over the years. On the sign out the front you will see some information.

X = the first number (8) divided by 2.
Y = the number of big blue letters (10-3=?)
Z = the number of red letters (6) divided by 2.

Now go to S36.55.646 E174.49.579. Here you will find the Southdown Co-Generation Facility (read all about it above). Next to the gate on the right hand side you will see a blue and silver sign.

A = The number of letters in the last word on the sign (43) - add the numbers together.
B = The number of letters in the last word in white on the sign (4 + 4).
C = How many hyphens on the sign? (4 - 3 =)

The final can be found at S36.55.ABC and E174.49.XYZ. (A camo container with the usual trade items). Its also your mission to speculate what the interesting feature at the cache site was used for.

Note that the final location for this cache has changed after we found out the secrets of the original location!
