One of the fondest memories I have of my father are the Saturday afternoons I spent with him in the garage of our little suburban home in the San Francisco bay area while I was growing up.

He would be working on his projects -- often fixing something that we kids had broken or tinkering with some of his woodworking tools, and I would be working on my own creative projects. The one constant that was always there with us was the radio, an old AM model with a tiny speaker and a cracked plastic case which held a place of honor on Dad's workbench shelf.

He had scribed a mark on the radio's tuner dial at A.M. 1490 to help lock in the Saturday afternoon baseball game broadcasts from Candlestick Park, and the ebb and flow of each game was like a comfortable and familiar melody in the background of our thoughts as we worked ... the pitch counts, the player's stats, the paid attendance, the chatter of the commentators ... all wove a thread through our conversations and our lives together.

My Dad's been gone for a long time now, but each time I hear that old familiar patter coming over the airwaves on Saturday afternoons, it's like he's still right there with me in spirit, cheering on those boys of summer.
