University Challenge (Manawatu) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tararua Turtle: Changes on campus have rendered the clues for this multi- unreliable. I'm unable to refresh the clues and waypoints so I'm archiving this one. A visit to the Massey University campus is still a worthwhile adventure though.

Geocache Description:

A multicache that will take you on a walking tour of the Massey University Turitea Campus. The published coordinates are NOT the final cache location, they will take you to the main car park. You will need to visit the waypoints on campus to solve the puzzle that will provide you with the coordinates of the cache location. NOTE: this cache does not require you to enter any university buildings or move in areas of the campus that may be restricted access.

This is a micro cache and to sign the log you will need to take your own writing instrument. Please take care to return the log as found, and re-hide the cache just as carefully. Thank you. Note also that during 'working hours' you'd be best to practice our best geocacher's stealth, there are adjacent offices that overlook GZ. Parking on the Massey Campus is strictly controlled. It is recommended that you park in the main car park and begin and end your walking tour there. There is a cost for parking. This cache will probably take you 20-30 minutes to do [early logs indicate that it may be 30 minutes+], depending on how much of the sights you want to take in. The walking is on sealed pathways with some steps; wheelchair access to all the waypoints is possible. Solving the puzzle to ascertain the final coordinates involves reading information from the signs and buildings located at the given waypoints. The waypoints have +/- variance 7 metres but were all taken using multiple (=> 25) averaged readings. The published coordinates are for the main carpark. To determine the coordinates for the final cache location solve for the following: S 40 23.xyz E 175 37.abc To obtain the required numbers for the final coordinates use these hints/instructions at each of the given way points: Waypoint 1 – Parking for how long? Minus 12 = x Waypoint 2 – Check out the sign above the door for the number of WE’s in this place. Double this number to = b Waypoint 3 – Control....? The first digit of frequency = z Waypoint 4 – Assembly point numbers. Just use the first number, this = y Waypoint 5 – Take the first name of the person for whom the building is named; the number of letters in that name = c Waypoint 6 – First digit of the obvious number over the entry of this building = a. Check sum = 31 The following information about Massey was taken from their website: Founded in 1927, near Palmerston North, Massey University Agricultural College was named after a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, William Ferguson Massey (1865 - 1925), who dedicated much of his life to the promotion of agriculture. The College offered degree programmes leading to Bachelor and Master of Agricultural Science degrees, and students could also enrol in a variety of short courses in farm Management and technology. Courses in horticulture were added after the War. From 84 students in its first year, the College's roll grew steadily to 500 in 1960. The following two decades saw a period of rapid change as Massey entered a major new phase in its development. Granted university status in 1963, Massey grew within two years into a multi-faculty institution comprising Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Technology, Veterinary Science, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences. extramural teaching was also introduced. In the 1970s the University expanded with further faculties in educational and Business studies. The University's continuing development has since been reflected in the growth of research centres and schools over the last two decades and in 1993, the establishment of a second campus at Albany on the North Shore of Auckland. In 1999 the University merged with Wellington Polytechnic to form Massey University Wellington. This has opened the doors to the world of design, fine arts and music to the rest of the University and the refurbishment of the former Dominion Museum as the 'front door' to Massey in Wellington has cemented the University in the capital. For more about Massey see www.aboutmassey.massey.ac.nz The campus has some particularly beautiful areas of bush and gardens, it is worthwhile exploring. There has also been a lot of recent building activity and you will notice new buildings in the concourse area, the halls of residence and the very recently opened Hopkirk Centre. Enjoy your visit.
