Geocache Description:

This cache-series introduces you to the world of NHL ice hockey.

Series consists of four caches altogether: the first two caches are easy traditional caches called the Unknown Team 1 and the Unknown Team 2. After you have found these two, you can go after two a bit harder caches; a mystery cache called the Unknown Team 3 and a mystery bonus cache called the Hockey Hall of Fame.

There are two different tasks you need to accomplish to get through the whole series.

Firstly, you have to find the first two caches and then solve the puzzle and think were on earth is the third cache, the Unknown Team 3.

Secondly, you need to get N and E coordinates given in every Unknown Team cache in order to find your way to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In every cache description, there is a piece of knowledge about the National Hockey League. There are also separate instructions at the same pages concerning the cache in question.

EDIT 29.11.2022: Since the previous traditional caches are no longer available, the first and the second team name are given here.

1st team name: Tampa Bay Lightning

2nd team name: Minnesota Wild

Remember to write down the hints for bonus cache.

Esa Tikkanen got his nickname “The grate one” from Gretzky, whose nickname was “the great one”. Both names mirror the characteristic styles of the players. Current Edmonton Oiler coach and former Tikkanen´s team mate Craig MacTavish said: "Esa talks twice as much as anybody else. That's because you can understand just half what he says".

The Unknown Team 3

To find this cache you first have to find caches the Unknown Team 1 and the Unknown Team 2. From both of these caches you find out the names of the teams. After you know the two first unknown teams you'll have to figure out which NHL-team is the Unknown Team 3. To find out which team is the Unknown Team 3 you don´t have to know anything about ice hockey or statistics. You can find knowledge about the teams from NHL website.

The Unknown Team 3 can be found at coordinates:

N = 31 * (a + b) * c

E = d * b * e * f / 1,945

a= Amount of letters in team´s full name

b= Amount of letters in team´s team name

c= Amount of e-letters in team´s full name

d= Amount of colours in team´s official logo

e= Amount of letters in team´s city name

f= Amount of a-letters in team´s full name

For example Finnish team Espoo Blues. Espoo Blues is the team´s full name (10 letters), Espoo is the city name (5 letters) and Blues is the team name (5 letters).

Remember also to check the coordinates for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The cache is a 1,2 litres container.

The Stanley Cup is championship trophy of the National Hockey League, named after its donor Lord Stanley. The first winner of the trophy was Ottawa Rebels in year 1892, years before The NHL was even found. Unlike in other Northern American leagues the winning team keeps the trophy only a year until a new champion is crowded. The names of the winning team, its coaches, players and other staff is engraved upon the trophy yearly. Current Stanley Cup champion is Detroit Red Wings. Seven Finnish players have won The Stanley Cup, "The Holy Grail" of the Ice hockey:

  • Jari Kurri 1984, -85, -87, -88 ja -90 (Edmonton Oilers)
  • Esa Tikkanen 1985, -87, -88, -90 (Edmonton Oilers) ja -94 (New York Rangers)
