Geocache Description:

TAKE NOTE: From September 1 through February 15 the Davis Wetlands area (and hence this cache) is only open for visitors on Mondays.

I like to bike 10-15 miles each day, so I try to vary my routes as much as possible to avoid boredom. On one expedition I discovered this amazing place that's not very far outside the city limits. It's a 12-mile round trip for me – just right!

This three-stage cache is located in the Davis Wetlands (and yes, I have explicit permission to place a cache here). If you don't want to bike the whole way, at least park in the first parking lot and walk or bike the two-mile loop. From a car you won't hear the scolding of the miniscule marsh wren, the weird warbling of the red-wing blackbird, or the killdeer shouting its own name.

There are some limits. The area is only open from 7am to 1pm each day; if you stay past 1pm you'll find yourself on the wrong side of a locked gate! And from September 1st through February 15th it's open only on Mondays. It's a great place to come with kids, but dogs aren't invited (they bother the avian inhabitants). And you need to follow the signs about where you can and can't go. STAY ON THE ROAD AND OFFICIAL PATHS. DON'T go tramping off where you might step on the wildlife! Be sure to sign in and sign out at the gate – and hey, maybe you'll want to add a muggle-proof geocaching comment to the guest log, like "Signal was here!".

The cache container isn't waterproof, so be sure to close the Ziploc. There's a little travel alarm clock for FTF – so you can get up even earlier and see more birds next time!

NOTE THIS CHANGE!Stage 2 has been muggled repeatedly; it looks like somebody has an eye out and removes it when I replace it. As a result I've had to make Stage 2 virtual. At the stated coordinates you'll find a sign. To calculate the offset from Stage 2 to the final you'll do a little math with the words on the sign. In each case use the alphabet number of the ltter - A=1, B=2, and so on.

Take number of the third letter in the last word and append the number of the first letter in the middle word. If the letters were L (12) and C (3) you'd have 123. Divide by 1000 and subtract from the W coord of Stage 2.

Add together the numbers for the first and last letters in the first word. Multiply by the number for the fifth letter in the last word. Divide by 1000 and add to the N coord of Stage 2.
