Geocache Description:

BYOB(boat) for this cache...follow your GPS to a nice little beach (unless it's a really low tide) on the far side of the island. Follow the point of the beach up, and you will be close to finding the cache. You can touch the cache while still standing on beach - no trampling or other whacking of bush required. Cache is micro but has larger hiding spot.

Please tread lightly, and leave rover at home or on the boat, since many seabirds nest here - see the nest photo in the gallery. Please replace exactly as found, and watch out for the tidal currents in this area, particularly at the opening to the marina and on the exposed side of the island. Cache now has room for logbook, mini pencil, a geocoin or two, and a couple of very small trade items (placed with 3 pins). This is a great little island, just off Oak Bay. According to the BC government (and locals):"By the time John Tod called this Mary Tod Island in 1856, the island might already have been known locally as "Jimmy Chickens' Island", referring to the Crusoe-like inhabitant who lived there for many years with his wife, Jenny Chickens. Jimmy Chickens was a well-known local character, "....considerably over sixty years of age" at his death in January 1901" Adding to this colourful history, the municipality of Oak Bay nearly burnt the entire island to the ground while setting off a fireworks display a few years ago. See the logs and gallery for more interesting lore. Be careful of the current and I suggest you land on the beach on the Oak Bay side, and walk around to the other side if it is windy, etc. This cache has been muggled (or quite possibly racooned or ottered) twice now, so please let me know if anything seems amiss. GPS reception is usually pretty good - location averaged to +/- 1.9m If you run into the 'unofficial caretaker' in his little white rowboat tender, say hi to him for me
