Geocache Description:

Cipher Progression #4: One Time Pad
By popular demand, the second of two new Cipher caches.

!CONGRATULATIONS! First to find on May 18 2007 by Deepdiggingmole !CONGRATULATIONS!

The logical conclusion to the Cipher Progression series and there can be no pretence that this can be done in the field. You will need your Viginere Tableau, some research and patience.

Like the previous two caches, it is a development of the Caesar Shift, but this uses a randomly generated key as long as the message itself and is impervious to frequency analysis. This makes it the cipher of choice for many governments..

In setting this problem, I had to consider how to define the key and get it to you. I could have generated some random letters and put them into a micro, but I don't like to repeat myself. Another method would be to use a transcendental number like Pi, which would have given me an infinite stream of numbers, but would limit each letter to just 10 possibilities. In the end, I decided to cheat; though if you decide to use this cipher in earnest, you will need to stick to a randomly generated series of letters as your key.

The key I have used is the last line from the main text of a work of literature which is available online and if you are interested in biology, may well have on your bookshelf. It is a seminal work and genuine contribution to our understanding of our place in this universe.

For those of you who have not figured this out yet, here is a clue: CD 1859. There is an additional clue in Cipher Digression #1.

The table below contains the cipher text in grey, plus two more rows: one for the key text and the last for your answer.

Once you have found the key text, fill in the letters minus spaces and punctuation, and use your Viginere tableau to reveal the message.

To decipher the first letter of the key text, place a straight edge along the 'T' row of the table and follow it across until you get the the letter Y. Go to the top of that column and you will find the letter F, which is the first letter of the message. It is easier to work through all the Ts, Bs etc, in turn.

As well as the co-ordinates, the message has a clue for the hide and describes the container.

NOTE: Be sure to use the first edition of this work in deciphering the puzzle. It is the one considered canonical.
