Geocache Description:

Risk being mauled by a rare Tasmanian Carnivore!

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit that “Rise UP to the Challenge” (my first cache) was anything BUT challenging! Hey, you don’t even need a GPSr to find it! There’s no risk involved, apart from the occasional club-wielding muggle; I’ve even stood at GZ whilst surrounded by Cute Fluffy Bunnies!

Well, No More Mr. Nice Guy!

Not only am I going to put your lives in mortal danger, but mine as well. You see, there is a secret the Tasmanian Government is desperate to hide – one that I have been trying for years to expose! But they’re good- very good! I’ve had Men-In-Black visit, and wipe my Hard Drive (and Men-In- White try to wipe my mind!) They see it as “not in the best interests of the State Economy, reliant as it is on the Tourist dollar, to risk the very real chance of a Tourist Drought, should this information be exposed.”

The truth is, this State is home to one of the most ferocious carnivores the world has ever known! THE SABRE-TOOTHED WOMBAT!

FOR YOU TO FIND EVIDENCE OF THIS CREATURE, YOU MUST READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION VERY CAREFULLY! Read, digest, (and maybe print) any links I may give. Failure to do so may mean missing a vital clue.

The “Vombatus Vishusmilus” (Scientific Name for Saber-Toothed Wombat, or STW) is similar to the Common Wombat (see (visit link) ), though smaller in size (body length 30-50cm shorter). Their Poo, or Scats, look similar to the Common Wombat’s Scats (see (visit link) ) but each Scat is much bigger, and it is not uncommon for them to produce Scat-piles 40cm (16 inches) high.

STW’s have an ancient ancestor similar to the “Zygomaturus tasmanicus” (see (visit link) ) although again, the “Vishusmilus Zygomaturus” was smaller (about half the size). They did not fare well because, although strong, large and savage, the root stems in their vicious fangs were very short, meaning that more often than not they lost their main attack mechanism at a very early age. That and the fact that their Sabre-Teeth often exhibited bioluminescent qualities; a quality still evident in some of the few fossilized examples that have been unearthed. As a nocturnal hunter, this must have been quite frustrating!

Even though extremely savage, it is the STW’s sleeping habits that make this fearsome creature virtually unknown. It is the only Tasmanian Marsupial that hibernates, and actually holds the world record for the longest hibernation period. These animals can lie dormant for hundreds of years without so much as a twitch of an ear- so long, in fact, that they usually end up half-buried, covered in dirt, moss, and lichen! But when they awake, it is with swiftness and no warning, allowing no time for a retreat from its vicious fangs! After being asleep for so long, they are ravenously hungry, and will stop at nothing to satisfy their carnivorous cravings. After a great deal of horrific carnage, and their enormous appetite finally satiated, the STW will quickly return to their dormant slumber.

I can show you no photos of these fearsome creatures (thanks to the MIB- see above) but before the MIW (see above) put a second chip in my brain I was able to hide one in the very place the Government would never think to look – the creatures habitat! Unfortunately I have no idea where I hid it, but I do know that I have left clues – the problem is that, due to the First Chip in my brain (DOH!), I may have placed these clues UNDER the VERY CREATURES I’m trying to EXPOSE! Hence the “MORTAL DANGER”! So be wary!

It is also IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Due to their dormant nature, all manner of creepy-crawly things have a habit of making their homes under a sleeping STW. Although I recall none were visible at the time of hiding the clues, this may well change. I would strongly suggest the use of leather garden gloves for safer retrieval. This is also Snake Country.

For their safety, your canine friends must be kept on a leash.

All hides are within 15 metres of the main track, although extensive reworking and re-routing of the tracks often makes "staying on the track" a question of "Which one?!?". I STRONGLY advise staying on the track("Which one!?!"), ducking up to a hide, then back to the main track ("Which one!?!"). Bush-bashing between hides is foolhardy at best, especially if you are accompanied by junior STW fodder, hence the proximity of the hides to the track ("Which one!?!").

Don’t dare be distracted by the constantly changing magnificent views!

Also be aware that since this cache was placed there has been extensive thinning out of the vegetation, due to territorial fights between female STW who seem to be waking more often, due to global warming. What used to be hiding places easy to conceal ones-self are now more exposed. Track re-routing, and new tracks, have also brought some of the hides closer to potential prying eyes- especially the first one!

Finally: The above coordinates are NOT for the first waypoint! They are for where I suggest you park, or start your plunge into peril. At this location you will also see a big sign with writing on it. This is NOT the sign that was here when the cache was first placed; the MIB have yet again messed with my mind, but thanks to Cacher GoldJ for bringing me out of hibernation, I have rejigged the clue for the first waypoint!

SO, looking at the NEW sign, there are four "Do's and Don'ts" listed in the bottom yellow strip. Look at the last "Do's and Don'ts"; this is a six word directive. Give each of these words a letter from A to F, then count the letters in each word to give a value to your letters A-F. For example, if the directive was:

"Please Do Not Upset The Wombats"

Then A=6 (because "Please" contains 6 letters) B=2 C=3 D=5 E=3 and F=7 (because "Wombats" contains 7 letters!)

So, looking at the fourth directive containing six words:

A B C D E F

Coordinates for first waypoint:

S42° 52 .(A-2) (B-7) (C+2)

E147° 21 . (D-1) E (F-5)

If you understood all that and produced some coordinates, then you may just be alert enough to survive the rest of this cache!

A hint for the First waypoint (if you need it) is below.

Good luck, and BE CAREFUL! And for those who disbelieve me, I say just this: It is the Tooth, the whole Tooth, and nothing but the Tooth...!
