Secret Passage (Auckland) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

tofska: The area is quite exposed now, and the cache's hide has been well dug up.

When this cache was placed, the Beveridge to Arataki track didn't even exist. I discovered the well overgrown cuttings by accident in an exploratory bush-bash. On finding the Monkey Drive tunnel, it was clear that something used to be here. At that time you could walk to the end of the tunnel, which was blocked up, and scare the passers-by on Exhibition Drive by poking your arm out of the ventilation pipe! :)

Geocache Description:

Oblivious to the many folk walking along Exhibition Drive, a small pipe in the cliff face at S36° 56.934 E174° 37.267, seamingly from nowhere, appears to breath!

Go for a walk along a long forgotten route that connects Exhibition Drive to Jacobson's Depot. This is possibly a historic path for the pipeline, as it follows along the same contour as the Nihotupu pipeline and there are cuttings in places wide enough for tram or vehicle access.

The cache is at the entrance to a tunnel. You don't need to go into the tunnel to find this cache, but if you want to explore it you will need a torch and gumboots. It is about 200 metres long, but the end has been sealed up with a small ventilation pipe at head height and a larger drainage pipe below.
