A short walk around part of Limpsfield Common and some of its’ World War 2 relics
Cache at N 51 15 EB(C-B) E000 D FD(A-F)

Limpsfield Common is a relatively unknown part of the Greensand ridge situated within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Near this location was the Nodal position of the Home Guard E Company of the 9th Surrey Battalion.

Between 1941 – 43 Six Spigot Mortar bomb placements or Blacker Bombards were constructed and a Spigot mortar Platoon the XIX was formed under Lieutenant S.E.Taylor A spigot mortar emplacement is where the Local Defence Volunteers (also known as the Home Guard), would attach their spigot mortars to guard against an enemy attack, in order to protect bridges and other strategic locations.
The spigot mortar (gun) was mounted on a stainless steel pin, which is set in a concrete base. The spigot mortar was extremely heavy (around 350lbs) and had a four-legged portable mounting. It is said it needed a crew of six to move it. The weapon would fire 20lb high explosive mortar bombs, which were propelled by black powder. It had an effective range of 100 metres in its anti-tank role and up to 450 metres when firing a lighter anti-personnel bomb.sHome Guard was concerned,
Of the six that were placed, only three remain, of which one can be found in a private garden and two on the edge of Limpsfield Common.

Would have got this much quicker but the local cricket team (And we won the Ashes today - Well done England!!) were playing and so had to walk a longer way around to get to the air raid shelters. What an amazing view. The log book is absolutely saturated so added some paper and signed that instead. All the other clues were found very easily. The box must have a hole in it as it was also still sealed in its bag well. TFTC.

Very pleasant foundation for a longer walk which we did in showery weather. Never knew the air raid shelters were there, so that was interesting.

Found cache easily but despite being well wrapped is very wet inside. Probably needs new logbook. Daschund and Muggle owner was slow to leave the area so caution was required. TNLN. TFTC.
