Geocache Description:

Battle of Guilford Courthouse Cache

NOTE: THIS CACHE IS NOT LOCATED ON THE GUILFORD COURTHOUSE BATTLE FIELD PARK.

This cache is placed in honor of the brave men that came together at this place, a long time ago … to fight and lose a great battle. This battle marked the beginning of the end for the British Army a short time later at a place called Yorktown.

This battle field is such an important part of our history that I wanted to establish a multi-staged cache that would allow the seeker to experience part of the story … if not the whole tour. Gather your clues, finish the entire tour, see the visitor’s center (great new movie on the history of the battle) … then head out to find the cache. The park closes at 5:00 PM but the first parts of this cache are all within walking distance of one of the parking lots.

There are four locations that you will need to visit in order to determine the GPS coordinates of the actual cache (located near … but out of the park). The start of the cache hunt will begin at the main coordinates above.

You will need pencil and paper and the following code: GILFORDCTH - 0123456789. The code is simple; you will be given clues for each of four locations. At each location you will find letters (a total of fourteen) that you will need to substitute for the numbers in the final GPS coordinates. The letter “G” would stand for the number “0”, the letter “I” would stand for the number “1” … and so on. You will need to fill out the coordinates in the order you get them into the following: N _ _ _ _._ _ _ , W _ _ _ _._ _ _ . Input these into your GPS and the cache is yours to find!

The main cache (#5) is a 2 gallon white plastic bucket … it contains a log book, misc. items and a few interesting trinkets made in Chile. These are matches that have been hand carved into little figures … inside of a small test tube on a wooden base. These are promotional gifts sent out by the company I work for. Enjoy.

NOW THE CLUES:

Main Coordinates: These will place you near the statue of Nathanel Greene. “THE” hero of the battle. First letter: What … according to the display … didn’t go well (first letter) Second letter: Quote by Cornwallis … He said this of Greene (one word, first letter) Third letter: Quote by Cornwallis … Who never felt secure when encamped in his neighborhood (first letter) Fourth letter: First letter in the last name of the man pictured in the large photo.

Second Coordinate: N 36 07.932, W 79 50.671. At this location you will find Fifth letter: The first letter in the name of the state where this gentleman died. Sixth letter: Quote by Washington … First letter in the 18th word. Seventh letter: Quote by Washington … First letter in the 9th word.

Third Coordinate: N 36 07.904, W 79 50.727. At this location you will find Eighth letter: First letter of the county name mentioned at the top of the display. Ninth letter: First letter in the nickname of this Lieut. Colonel. Tenth letter: Battle of Stono _ _ _ _ _ (3rd letter) Eleventh letter: Battle fought on October 4, 1777 (first letter)

Fourth Coordinate: N 36 07.823, W 79 50.630. At this location you will find Twelfth letter: This spot is the start of the Second _ _ _ _ (first letter) Thirteenth letter: From this spot … go to the new display just beyond this point. First paragraph, 8th word, first letter) Fourteenth letter: At the second display, picture represents a “sustained _ _ _ _” (first letter)

When you find the main cache ... the area is visible from the trail ... please be cautious not to attract attention. Please also be sure to recover the cache completely to avoid accidental detection.
