The Elgar Enigma series celebrates the 150th anniversary of
Elgar's birth, the countryside that so inspired him and his first
widely recognised work, Variations on an Original Theme, more
commonly known as The Enigma Variations.
|
Variation IV (Allegro di molto) W.M.B. was dedicated to William
Meath Baker, a country squire, who was noted for being an excellent
host with a penchant for arranging the timetable for the day. The
feature illustrated in the Variation is his bustling manner and his
way of slamming the door after he had left the room.
WMB lived in Gloucestershire but this cache is in the county
capital of another of the three counties.

This cache is hidden in Worcester, the city in which Elgar's
father owned his music shop, where his father met his mother in a
local public house, where Elgar learned music and the location of
the cathedral where Elgar played the organ. From the park where the
cache is hidden you get a great view of the cathedral, the city and
the Malvern Hills. At the end of the High Street there is a statue
of Elgar and a plaque marking the location of his father's shop
(since demolished).
