Oy Kaukas Ab (nimi vuoteen 1953 Kaukaan Tehdas Oy) oli suomalainen vuosina 1873-1986 pääosin Lappeenrannan seudulla toiminut metsäteollisuusyhtiö.
Yhtiö sai alkunsa, kun Robert Björkenheim ja kolme hänen yhtiökumppaniaan sopivat 6. helmikuuta vuonna 1873 lankarullatehtaan perustamisesta Mäntsälän Kaukaan kosken rannalle. Tehdas tuotti kuitenkin vain vähän voittoa ja vasta vuonna 1882 voitiin yhtiön osakkaille jakaa ensimmäiset osingot. Koska Mäntsälän tehtaan lähiympäristöstä ei enää saanut riittävästi tehtaan käyttämää koivupuuta, rakennettiin vuonna 1890 toinen lankarullatehdas Lappeenrannan lähelle. Vuonna 1894 yhtiö myytiin Hugo Standertskjöldille ja sen toimitusjohtajaksi tuli Gösta Björkenheim. Kaukaasta tuli osakeyhtiö vuonna 1903. Lähde Wikipedia & UPM-Kymmene yrityshistoria.
Some history about place:
One of the pioneers in spotting the potential of birch wood was Robert Björkenheim, who had birch in his own forests in southern Finland. Being engaged in the sawmill industry, he saw machine bobbins being made in his father's homeland, Sweden, and went on to Glasgow to pursue the idea further. On February 6, 1873, Björkenheim and three others signed an agreement for the establishment of a bobbin factory at Mäntsälä on the banks of the Kaukas Rapids.
The first bobbin deliveries went to Scotland, where the largest buyer was Clark & Co. The production figures rose, but little profit was made, and it was 1882 before a dividend could be issued. The dwindling birch resources in the timber supply area, combined with the favorable outlook for this industry, prompted the decision to found a new factory near Lappeenranta in 1890.
