This is my first cache placement and it is dedicated to all of
my DNF’s to date and the many yet to come. The worst ones are those
that are self inflicted due to incorrect calculations on a
puzzle/mystery cache and improperly entering the coordinates into
the GPS. In either scenario, you can’t find it no matter how hard
or long you look.
I spent a long time in the area of the final with _TeddyBear
looking for another cache in these woods. It was my 8th DNF, but my
1st DNF due to incorrect coordinates. After reading the log for
that cache, it seems that someone else may have been in this very
area too due to the same miscalculation. So just in case someone
winds up near here again, they might find a cache, but not the one
they were intending to discover.
I stumbled across a survey disk in the woods while geocaching in
the area. (see the 7/21/07 entry if you want to learn more about
it.)
The directions to the survey disk can be found by solving the
below puzzle. There is a logging trail that heads straight back at
about 60 degrees from the VAST trail. It should get you most of the
way there.
7311, 7045, 3612, 3144, 4351, 5737, 7023, 2102, 8598, 5743,

Once you are at the survey disk, take the year stamped on it and
use the following formula to find the location of the final:
Survey mark coordinates from the puzzle: N44 AB.CDE W 073
FG.HIJ. Year on survey disk KLMN.
Subtract CDE from LMN and add 20 for your new North – AB.xxx.
Subtract (K+M+N) from HIJ for your new West – FG.xxx.
The final is a 30 cal ammo can. The original contents include a
FTF, STF, and TTF prizes which should be apparent. The rest are
typical cache trading items. There should be plenty of room for
trading once the top three prizes are gone.
Please be gentle with the comments – resist the temptation to
log yawning comments like “a quick find”, “located after a short
search”, and “found this one easily”. My intention was that it be
interesting rather than challenging. Hopefully it fits the
bill.
Please do not visit the posted
coordinates. They are on private property. On a Saturday
during the month of May, you might see a group of Cub Scouts there
launching their model rockets a few thousand feet into the air!
Parking is available at the posted coordinates all year long;
although you might get closer at certain times of the year.
Congratulations to catoz on the
FTF!
