Geocache Description:

A micro to guide you to parking for Yellow Rose and Panther Beaches

This little cache will bring you to the parking lot for two great beaches along the Santa Cruz County coast: Yellow Rose and Panther Beaches.

I placed a cache further up the parking lot to mark the trail head to the beaches, but I archived that cache to make room for Shelobs Lair.

From here go down to the end of the parking lot, and cross the railroad tracks to find the trail head that leads down to beautiful Panther Beach. Once you are down at the beach you can also access the adjacent Yellow Banks Beach by going through the "Hole in the Wall", a natural coastline arch best accessed at times other than high tides.

Oh, and by the way, don't be surprised to find that clothing is considered "optional" at the beaches!

Both beaches are part of the storied Coast Dairies property near Davenport that officially became part of the California State Parks system in 2006.

The 407 acres ceded to the park service offers "scenery and resources that have elicited a sense of connection to the land for many generations of residents and visitors," according to a state report.

The Coast Dairies property is bordered on the south by the 4,000-acre Wilder Ranch State Park, and on the north by the 3,200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch. In all, Coast Dairies boasts five miles of coastline, six creeks and seven beaches.

Eight years of negotiations put the 407-acre coastal stretch between Scott Creek and Four Mile Beach in the hands of the state this summer, a gift from the nonprofit Trust for Public Land. It's one of the largest additions of public beaches in decades, but it's just the beginning. Early next year, the trust will hand over the roughly 5,700-acre inland portion of Coast Dairies to the federal Bureau of Land Management.

The Trust for Public Land didn't make any improvements to the land after acquiring it in 1998. So, the trails on the property are often like the coastline: rough and, at times, treacherous.

With the unsettled ocean crashing up against warm, coral sands against a backdrop of colorful and steep cliff sides, Panther Beach and adjacent Yellow Banks Beach are probably the most spectacular pieces of land in this hidden playground. Adding to their beauty is the adventure beach-goers undertake to get there!

Remember to bring your digital camera and post some pictures! Of the beaches, I mean!

Enjoy! And happy caching.
