Geocache Description:

Be the Genealogist is a series based on my other hobby. It's a hobby that I enjoy doing, so much so, that I decided to allow other geocachers to get a taste of it. Although these caches are all puzzles, none are meant to be extremely difficult.

In addition, I decided that since I like hiking, I'd create some long ones. All the hikes in this series will require at least a half mile hike (as the crow flies), each way, to and from the cache.

This is one of six of the initial caches, that will lead to the final cache, for a total of seven caches. In order to get the final cache, there's a question related to the series finale on the inside cover of each container. Bring something to write on and with, to record the question, or take a picture of it. Answer all 6 questions, and you'll know where the final is.

Cache hide adjustment after cache was moved by park employees Lat: +6 Long: -2 The coordinates aren't where the cache is, rather it's a suggested parking space. From the parking lot you'll need to find the trail that goes towards 95, and then take a left at the "T". Walk down until you get to the branch for the Orange Trail on your right. The Orange Trail is a loop, however it doesn't make any difference which way around the loop you go (take one way to the cache, one way back)

On to the puzzle. It's important when doing genealogical research to know which jurisdiction to look in. Counties and cities change in geography, as new counties and cities are created. Your task is to figure out which jurisdiction you'd be in, given the current place and a date of long ago.

For example, if you were physically in the current Fairfax County, in the year 1655, you'd be in Westmoreland County.

Here are the present day locations and the date(match with the old jurisdictions below):
N 38
Fauquier County in 1665
City of Alexandria in 1747
.
Fairfax County in 1734
Prince William County in 1733
Arlington County in 1845

W 077
Stafford County in 1663
Loudoun County in 1760
.
Spotsylvania County in 1719
City of Fredricksburg in 1726
Stafford County in 1666

Figure out the city/county you'd then be in, and transpose the number associated with the city/county below:

0-Alexandria County, Washington D.C.
0-Spotsylvania County
1-Arlington County
1-Fairfax County
1-Loudoun County
2-Westmoreland County
3-Stafford County
4-City of Fredricksburg
5-King George County
6-Prince William County
7-Essex County
7-King and Queen County
7-King William County
8-City of Alexandria
9-Fauquier County

Remember, bring something to write on, to capture the question for the finale.

If you have any problem with the puzzle, or the coordinates, or any part of the cache, email me, and I'll help/fix any issues.

Thanks to MGSGAGAG for passing along and painting most of the containers for this series. Thanks to the Prince William County Park Authority for allowing me to place this cache.

Congrats to 2Wheel'in for hitting 1300 on this cache

This Cache series was voted Best Series in NOVAGo's 2007 cache awards!

Congrats to Nondescript on the FTF.

Fall 2008 Update: When I placed the cache, there were no trails south of the power lines. That has changed. In fact, the new trail cut right over the hiding spot. Volunteers from Prince William Trails and Streams found the cache, and move it a little bit (coordinates might be a little different). So now the cache is within 15 feet of the trail. And I wanted to require people to bushwhack a little to get this. Not anymore. Still a good hike.
