Bokkenrijders 1 Traditional Geocache

Deze cache ligt op de laatste uitloper van het Limburgse heuvelland. Vanuit Sittard is het een korte klim.

This cache is located on the last slope to the north of the hills in Limburg. From the town Sittard it is a short climb.
De bokkenrijders zijn een 17de eeuwse Limburgse bende. Volgens sommigen hadden zij sociale motieven, en stalen ze van de rijken om aan de armen te geven.
In het kleine gebouwtje in de buurt van de cache legden zij hun ritele eed van trouw aan de bende af.
De bokkenrijders zijn een mooie legende maar hebben in werkelijkheid mogelijk nooit bestaan. Door de harde martelmethodes tijdens de ondervragingen van zogenaamde bendeleden verraadden de, waarschijnlijk zelf al onschuldige, verdachten vriend en vijand, en zijn ook hun bekentenissen niets waard.
In deze cache graag tekeningetjes e.d. of dingen die met streekhistory te maken hebben.

The Bokkenrijders (=billy goat riders) are a Limburgian gang from the 17th century. According to some they were inspired by social motives, comparable to those of Robin Hood (they stole from the rich and gave to the poor).
In the little building you can see near the cache, the Bokkenrijders swore their ritual oath of loyalty to the gang.
The Bokkenrijders are a beautiful legend, but they probably never existed. Because of the severe torture-methods during the interrogations of so called gang members, they, themselves often innocent victims, betrayed other innocent people. So in the end the gang consisted of several hundred members for a small amount of raids.
