Monumental location in a village unknown to most Jerseyites.
This cache is part ot the "Downtown/Main Street USA" series. Please

Micro in a small sunny park with a gravel path. Please bring your
own writing utensil. Parking is most always available on Village
Road (New Vernon's Main Street).
New Vernon was settled in 1727. It has one trafic light at the
crossroads of Blue Mill Road/Lee's Hill Road and Village/Glen Alpin
Roads. There is a new post office, two real estate offices, two
delicatessens, a volunteer firehouse, a few random businesses in
renovated houses and some various businesses on Route 202 on the
edge of town. One would think that there is not much here and the
town is outdated and sleepy. Surprise! A home base for corporate
heads and the quietly wealthy, New Vernon hides her residents in
estates at the end of long driveways. In fact, New Vernon was
ranked in the top 25 richest zip codes in the United States by
Forbes magazine in 2006.There are very few street lights but never
fear, most residents know all fifteen policemen by name.
These wealthy residents are also very generous. The busiest weekend
of the year is the last Saturday in September when the NVVFD (New
Vernon Volunteer Fire Department) holds it's annual auction. Hoards
of bargain hunters come from parts unknown to get a piece of what
these residents donate in support of the NVVFD.
Your cache is in a park which memorializes both the WWII New Vernon
residents who died defending their homeland (nine men) and a
tasteful 9/11/2001 memorial. The latter is a rock adorned with four
bronze busts remembering the four men who were lost in 9/11 in
addition to two benches designed by New Jersey local artist Peter
Allen. The benches were fashioned from steel remains of the north
and the south towers of the former World Trade Center in New York
City. At the cache location, look for the placques on the benches
themselves.
