This cache is inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy Antony And
Cleopatra. When I came upon the ruins of a part of the
canals, it made me think of great things that were suddenly ruined.
There are a lot of examples of sudden and absolute ruination among
Shakespeare's tragedies, but I think Antony & Cleopatra is one
of the most stark. Water played an important part in their downfall
- the loss of a great battle on the water was the beginning of
their downfall. A synopsis of the play as well as the full text can
be found here. There have been a few TV and movie
adaptations of the play TV and
movie adaptations of the play.
"My salad days, when I was green in
judgment."
(Act I, Scene V)
Like all my other Shakespeare caches, you do not have to read
the play to find the cache.
The Area
While exploring a boat access to the Merrimack River in
Hooksett, I came across a historical marker that described the
canal system that once passed through the area. It told of remnants
of the canals that can still be found. The most notable remnants
are down by Amoskeag Falls in Manchester. But, because of their
proximity to an active railroad line, you won't find a cache there.
So, I was excited to find that their were additional remnants here.
I'm not sure what part the remains played in the workings of the
canal. If you know, please let me know.
Please Note
- There may be fishing muggles in the area.
- The cache is a small, sandwich-sized lock & lock.
- The cache can be seen without moving anything. However, you
need to move something to access it. Please, do not move things
until you spot the cache.
- Please re-hide as you found it so fishing muggles won't spot
it.
