The Freezeout trailhead is located about 30 miles from Winthrop. The last 10 miles is a good gravel road. The road is open to this trailhead as of 9/01/07. You may want to check with the Forest Service to confirm status.
The first mile of the trail was burned over by the Tripod fire in 2006 but is in good shape with very little ash on the trail. If you take dogs, you may want to wash their paws after the hike. There is no water available. The roundtrip hike from the Freezeout Trailhead is about 6.0 miles with an elevation gain of 1,700 feet. Allow about 4 hours to make the roundtrip. It can be windy and buggy at the summit but there are some nice picnic spots on the ridge before you start the final climb. The cache is a two quart lock & lock plastic container.
We put this cache out for the Lookout and 100 highest Washington peaks challenges. The lookout at Tiffany Mountain (8,245 feet) was constructed in 1932 and removed in 1953. There are still a small amount of debris left from the lookout. There is also a summit register in the pipe at the summit with a benchmark and reference mark nearby.
