This cache has been archived.

Growly Bear: As there's been no cache to find for some time, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Fantastic spot with panoramic views. Easy walk to the top.
Watch the cliff drops though.

This is a cousin to Hauraki Haven. Some neat views are to be had here both day and night.

The headland was known as Te Pane o Horoiwi, named after Horoiwi who arrived on the Tainui waka. He lived here while the waka continued on to Kawhia. Today it is known more as Achilles Point, which commemorates the 1939 battle of the River Plate where the New Zealand crewed Achilles engaged with other allied vessels to defeat legendary German cruiser Graf Spee.

The view from the headland stretches from Auckland city in the west to the distant peaks of Coromandel Peninsula in the east. The distinctive cone shape of Rangitoto Island lies just across the water. This is the most recent and the largest of Auckland's volcanoes, emerging from the sea just 600 to 700 years ago in a series of fiery explosions. This was the only eruption witnessed by humans - footprints were found in ash deposits on the neighbouring island Motutapu.

The walk is easy and is a nice spot to visit.

PLEASE keep an eye on the kids as there are steep cliffs very close to GZ.

Cache is a micro and contains the usual items. Be prepared with a pen to fill in the log. There's not too much room in there..

Bring the camera as well.

Please be sure the receptacle is holding the cache firmly as I think it can get loose and fall out. You can tighten the fingers if needed so cache fits snuggly. You will see what I mean when you get there.

Thanks.

Happy caching.
