Geocache Description:

This is probably one of the more difficult caches in the Kenora area. Most of them seem to be accessible in flip flops. This one isn't. Easy to find but the ground is somewhat rugged. Park at the gate to the snow dump near the dog pound. Due north 200 metres from there. The cache has been started with three bugs to encourage visits. If left too late winter will make this one tough.

This is the Rat Portage cache. The site is historically significant as it is located adjacent to the original portage between Lake of the Woods and the Winnipeg River. Go down to the river from the cache and you will be looking at the very route used for centuries to move goods and people north before the railway and roads. The area is posted as an archeaological site so don't take any of the bottles and stuff that is all over the place. Looking north west you will see the Voyageur Route cache that marks the point where the Winnipeg River turns east and then north. How many people and how much history passed both of these places? Let's hope the site is protected and maybe promoted as the orignal birthplace of Kenora which is an acronym for the towns of Keewatin, Norman, and Rat Portage.
