Geocache Description:

You can find the cache near Somogydöröcske village on the top of József-hill (height 294 m) at the look-out tower. (Ident. in Hungary: GCDERE)

Somogydöröcske village is situated in the valley of Koppány-brook. The name of this brook bears the name of Koppány, who was a rebellious head of a Hungarian clan and his landed properties was situated here, in Somogy county in the times of Géza king. Koppány was a great-great-grandchild (acc. to lineage Árpád-Tarhos-Tevel-Zerind-Koppány) of Árpád who was the conquering chieftain in time of Magyar Resettling of Hungary (a.d. 896). In time of Géza king’s death (a.d. 997)Géza’s son, Vajk (in the baptism he got the István name, that is Stephen) was the crown prince, and he was also great-great-grandchild of Árpád (acc. to lineage Árpád-Zsolt-Taksony-Géza-Vajk). There was a question about succession to the throne: who will the king be? On the basis of ancient rule Koppány as the elder descendant of king Árpád; or Vajk, because he was the son of the preceding king. In the course of civil war Koppány dead; the 16 years old Vajk (later king St. Stephen) became the king and he ruled 997-1038. Somogydöröcske village has stormy history. The medieval village was annihilated in the course of islam invasion (1543-1689). German immigrants were settled later to supply the exterminated Hungarian inhabitants. The majority of German origined Hungarian subjects was expulsioned after Second World War and population of Somogydöröcske decreased. In 1946 new immigrants arrived into the empty houses. On the basis of Benes-decrees the Hungarian subjects of Highland (today Slovakia) suffered collective deprivation of civil rights and many people was forced to move to Hungary and they arrived the deserted villages instead of Germans who were gone away. Somogydöröcske has a typical view of Sváb (Shvaab = Hungarian subject German) villages in the time of late 1800s. The new houses also preserved the traditional features. You can find the cache on the top of József-hill near the look-out tower that is approachable in various way. 1.
