Politimesteren
Rendsborg. Jacob Eckmann
"Svendborg. Politistationen var det sted, hvorfra Retfærdighedens
Øje, i den grønne Lygtes skær vaagede over byen.

The Chief of Police
At the turn of the century the weekly periodical
"Familiejournalen" #7 of February 15, 2000, the late Chief of
Police at the last turn of the century was used to illustrate that
not only a century but a full epoque had reached an end. According
to the magazine this Chief of Police was the last of his kind in
the Town of Svendborg to be appointed directly from the files.
On the old photo above the Chief of Police - number two from the
left in the front row - is posing with the entire police force of
Svendborgs of those days. One can safely say that all of these
gentlemen are placed in a position to favour the display of their
medals. If no medal is seen, the person probably didn't have any
medal.
It almost is an account of immigration. The Chief of Police
originally came from Holstein. He was the youngest son of farmer
Peter Eckmann of Jevenstedt a little south of the old Danish border
town, Rendsborg.
In the first
place Jacob Eckmann was a musician and earned to his living by
playing at parties, weddings and funerals. His big brother
Hans, had participated in the construction of the railroad
between Altona and Kiel, and following thart he had
participated in the construction of the railroad between
Roskilde and Copenhagen. Following that he settled in Denmark
and lured his brother Jacob to join him here.
Excerpt from The Police Friend :"Svendborg. The
police station was the place, from where the eye of justice, in a
green light watched over the city. In 1898 Eckmann became the First
Police Chief, and that certainly fit him well. In his shiny uniform
with helmet and foil (sword) and medals on his chest and dress
gloves, he felt like some nobleman granting audience to and Hearing
the citizens and persons being help at the police station. For
misdemeanors, he held interrogations after arrest or voluntary
accompaniment and gave the smallest fine as the sentence. He was
effective and enthusiastic and would happily go out into the field
in full gear with the force on the 'big days', Markets, Fires,
Parades, New Year's Eve, etc. Later he became more settled and
established a better relationship with the citizens before his
death in 1911 (75 years old)."
