Politimesteren

Oktober 1834 i Jewensted pr.

ENGLISH:

The Chief of Police

At the turn of the century the weekly periodical "Familiejournalen" #7 of February 15, 2000, the late Chief of Police at the last turn of the century was used to illustrate that not only a century but a full epoque had reached an end. According to the magazine this Chief of Police was the last of his kind in the Town of Svendborg to be appointed directly from the files.

On the old photo above the Chief of Police - number two from the left in the front row - is posing with the entire police force of Svendborgs of those days. One can safely say that all of these gentlemen are placed in a position to favour the display of their medals. If no medal is seen, the person probably didn't have any medal.

It almost is an account of immigration. The Chief of Police originally came from Holstein. He was the youngest son of farmer Peter Eckmann of Jevenstedt a little south of the old Danish border town, Rendsborg. In the first place Jacob Eckmann was a musician and earned to his living by playing at parties, weddings and funerals. His big brother Hans, had participated in the construction of the railroad between Altona and Kiel, and following thart he had participated in the construction of the railroad between Roskilde and Copenhagen. Following that he settled in Denmark and lured his brother Jacob to join him here.

Excerpt from The Police Friend :"Svendborg. The police station was the place, from where the eye of justice, in a green light watched over the city. In 1898 Eckmann became the First Police Chief, and that certainly fit him well. In his shiny uniform with helmet and foil (sword) and medals on his chest and dress gloves, he felt like some nobleman granting audience to and Hearing the citizens and persons being help at the police station. For misdemeanors, he held interrogations after arrest or voluntary accompaniment and gave the smallest fine as the sentence. He was effective and enthusiastic and would happily go out into the field in full gear with the force on the 'big days', Markets, Fires, Parades, New Year's Eve, etc. Later he became more settled and established a better relationship with the citizens before his death in 1911 (75 years old)."

SVENDBORG NEWSPAPER 26 Oct 1904: One of Svendborgs most popular and upstanding civil servant, Policechief Jacob Eckmann, is tomorrow celebrating his 70th birthday,he was born the 27th October 1834 in Jewensted, at Rendsborg where his father was a farmer. The 21st May 1855 he volunteered in the 7th Batallion as musician. The Batallion was garrisoned in Copenhagen, and he advanced to Bandleader on the 30th April 1857. The 30th April 1865 he had the honor of receiving a medal of honor for 8 years of faithful service in the army, and was hired by the police in The Town of Svendborg on the 1st of January. He received a combat medal in October 1876 for participating in the war of 1864 and was decorated the 11th October 1882 with the Dannebrogsmaendenes medal of honor, received on the 9th October 1897 the "Fortjenst medal" in Silver and was promoted the 1st October 1898 to Chief of Police in The Town of Svendborg".
