A quick drive-by cache on hwy 44 near an interesting stone struture
The Chimney was a marker on the road to friends' cottages as a kid.
Now that we have our own cottage, my family and I compete to see
who can be the first to spot the chimney, as it means we're nearly
at the lake.
I have long been intrigued by this stone structure that stands
alongside hwy 44. I wondered who built and and why. Other such
"chimney's" have been discovered in the Whiteshell area and no one
knows what the purpose of these sometimes well-built structures
were and who took the time to build them. Various people have
speculated that they were used to store dynamite for the railroad,
but they are often built too far away and over too difficult a
terrain to have been used for this purpose. Others wonder if they
were used for fires, but no carbon residue is found in them. This
particular one was vandalized a few years ago and is now much
shorter than it has been.
I have long wanted to highlight this interesting and mysterious
structure and add a cache along hwy 44.
The cache should be a quick stop and is a small thermos for
smaller items. It contained a log book and pencils, a few key
chains and our own dolphy blue TB to get it started. Be carefull
stopping along the highway and happy hunting.

October 3, 2009 by Muz and Girlie (345 found) As we searched for this cache, I wondered that perhaps a difficulty and terrain rating of 1 was a little inappropriate. I was thinking more along the lines of a 5. As I stood in the middle of a bog, halfway to my knees in swamp water, supposedly at ground zero, a 1 just didn't seem to make sense. We felt like Sam and Frodo in the Dead Marshes ("Precious...where is the precious cache?"). So, in retrospect wishing I'd done this earlier, I asked Girlie to compare the coordinates on the GPSr to those I'd written down in my notebook. It seems I'd made a slight error when entering the coords (by only one digit...how bad could that be?), and now found myself 100m away from the actual location, and on the wrong side of the highway. Oops. Several choice phrases later, we walked out of the bush only to realize we'd parked right beside the chimney. Sixty seconds later we found the cache, right where it was supposed to be, when you program the GPSr properly. Gads, how embarrassing. Ah well....lesson learned (doubtful, but I'm ever the optimist). For our efforts, and they were considerable, we took a carabiner, and left some tattoos. Thanks very much for the cache, and the inadvertent adventure.

September 24, 2009 by RW/RW (2513 found) These rock formations remind us of home (Flin Flon) - had to check and make sure we were driving south - not north! TNLN SL T4TC

September 22, 2009 by Flotsom and Jetsom (706 found) On a nice day for caching and sight seeing. Jetsom remembers this chimney from his days working at Pinawa (late '60's) when he used to drive to visit Flotsom (his fiance) at her parent's cottage at Caddy Lake. Have no idea what it was for but will try to check some possible sources. TFTH
