Geocache Description:

Spidsbjerg

Klitterne på Sdr. Thorsminde Tange

Stormen i 1981

Kystfodring

Legepladsen rummer forskellige legeredskaber.

The Danish Coastal Authority

The Danish Coastal Authority (Kystdirektoratet) – a division of the Ministry of Transport and Energy – is the state advisory on coastal protection. The Danish Coastal Authority constructs and maintains state coast protection on the west coast of Jutland. Other assignments are harbour operation, dredging, and storm surge alerts for the west coast of Jutland and the tidal flats.

Coastal protection on the west coast
The west coast of Jutland is constantly affected by waves and currents from the North Sea. To protect man-made valuables from erosion and flooding, the Danish state has carried out coast protection on the west coast since 1875.

On exposed sections, for example the bar of Harboøre and at Bovbjerg, groynes has been built as a safeguard against the massive powers of the sea. There are approximately 100 groynes made of granite and concrete is on the west coast. The largest rocks in the groynes weigh more than 15 tons. The first groyne was built at Bovbjerg in 1875.

The groynes cannot stop the coastal withdrawal fully, but they have for almost 100 years been the only usable method for reduction of erosion on the west coast.

In 1974 the method of coast nourishment was taken into use. When doing coast nourishment sand is pumped onto the beach or onto the sea bottom in near-shore areas to compensate for lost sand. Coast nourishment has reduced and in some places put an end to the natural coastal withdrawal on the west coast.

The groynes on the west coast are still maintained, and on especially critical sections there is, to strengthen the seawall, constructed a sloping revetment of concrete in front of or hidden in the seawall (for example at Ferring lake).

Coast nourishment
In 2005 the west coast will be nourished with approximately 3.6 million m3 of sand. The expenses are shared between the Danish state, the administrative district of Ringkøbing and the affected coastal municipalities.

A specially built vessel draw in sand from the sea bottom approximately 5-10 kilometres from the coast and transport it to the coast in the ships holding area. At this point the ship is coupled to a large rubber hose, whereafter the sand is pumped through the hose and onto the sea bottom close to land or onto the beach itself. These methods are called “near-shore nourishment" and "beach nourishment”.

The beach itself is not affected by the work and public access to the beach while the work takes place is still possible. Some traffic with heavy machinery can take place when the large rubber hoses are handled. In consideration to your own safety, we request that some distance is kept to the machines while they are working.

Without coastal protection on the Danish west coast an average of approximately 1 metre of coast would disappear every year. Measurements show that there has been no withdrawal of the coastline in the past years. Coast nourishment has thus stopped the natural withdrawal of the coast.

The displayed coordinates is to a parking place at :

The Nature playground at Spidsbjerg

Children loves challenges, and this place got a whole lot of them. The playground contains different kinds of playing instruments. There is among other things an aerial ropeway in the trees, and a big slide. Here is also tables and benches.
All the playing instruments, like seesaws, swings and climbing frames, is made out of natures own materials.

This is where our little “treasure hunt” begins.

Numbers of seats on the “wooden train” plus 1 = A
Numbers of vertical posts on both sides of the slide pipe, minus 9 = B
The sum of the digits of numbers of branches on the vertical climbing tree. = C
Numbers of vertical posts on the climbing wall, divided with 3 = D
Numbers of vertical posts on the horizontal climbing ladder, plus 50% = E

The cache is on these coordinates :
N 56 BC.EBB
E 008 0A.CDE

When you have found the cache, you can follow the path/road in direction west. This will lead you to a very fine beach. Good parking. Current, wind and weather change the water from time to time. Because of that please follow some simple bathing rules: Check the position of the life-saving post and read the instuctions upon arrival to the beach.
The FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) has awarded the Blue Flag to Spidsbjerg beach in 2007
