sandvika: Photos kindly taken and sent to us by Håkan & Lina show they found the correct place and the cache has gone.

It is a great shame to archive this cache, however, the hollow tree was clearly not a secure enough hide. I hope the photos and logs for this cache will encourage someone else to place a new cache in a better place on Ile aux Cerfs in the future and bring other geocachers to this little paradise.

Geocache Description:

Ile aux Cerfs (Deer Island) is a popular tourist bathing and watersports area. Whilst there you can now do a spot of geocaching too.

Ile aux Cerfs is easily reached by water taxi/bus from Trou d'Eau Douce on the East coast of Mauritius. You are dropped off at one of several pontoons and should arrange your return trip before you leave the boat. Ideally do not part with any cash until your return trip has been honoured! We paid 300 Rupees per adult and 200 Rupees per child for a private speed boat ride, collected about 4 hours later for the return. Regular water bus should be cheaper than this, though it was fun in the speed boat and my GPSr recorded 50 km/h briefly!

We waymarked where our car was parked on the mainland as well as the landing jetty, not that you are likely to get lost on such a small island. The cache is set amidst the trees a short way inland from the excellent public bathing beach on the East side of the island, overlooking the lagoon. It's an easy find. As the woods and beaches are raked frequently when cleared of debris, it's not on the ground. That should be the only clue you need, the encrypted one is a spoiler! Please wedge it back firmly as you find it, otherwise gravity will reveal it to muggles.

As an aside, we have ruled out several brilliant cache hiding places because of the wild monkeys on the main island. If you would like to place caches on Mauritius then this is a factor you must consider. As they immitate humans so well, you should treat monkeys as muggles, otherwise they may simply retrieve the cache as soon as you are out of view!
