Birth of GISELA Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

615: We have decided to archive the cache since it was too complicated for us to keep up with maintenance. RIP good old cache.

Geocache Description:

This multicache is placed on the campus of Århus University and leads you to all the places at AU where you might find people working with geographic data in their research.

Dansk:

Sted A: N56 09.773; E10 12.600
A=Antal bogstaver I statuens navn
Ved A finder du Geologisk Institut. Her arbejder forskerne med petrologi, palæontologi og geofysik.

Sted B: N56 10.021; E10 12.314

N56 (B+C).(A^2+B^2+C^2+D^2)+(A*B)+D;
E10 (A+B).((A+B+C+D)*(B+C))–((2*C*D)+C)

De sidste to steder her er ikke nødvendige for at løse gåden, men det er vigtige steder for rigtige GIS’ere.

Sted F: N56 10.329; E10 11.270

English:
There are four clues that lead you to the cache and it should be a pleasant walk of about 2km.

We suggest you start at coordinate A and work your way through the list although you can choose another starting point – the order is not important. The questions are not that hard and if you work or study at AU, you might be able to answer them without visiting – Take the walk however - we want to give you a little description of each place, to let you know what is going on behind those walls.

Initial contents of the geocache also explain, why we want you to visit these places. Gisela the dolphin (trademark of AU) is a TB waiting to explore places that are linked to geography or science (other universities or science institutes, cultural or natural heritage sites aso. – if that is impossible she would just like to travel as far around the world as she can) – see more on her link. This little tour should put you on the same wave as her.

Place A: N56 09.773; E10 12.600
A=Number of letters in the name of the statue.
At Place A, you will find part of the Department of Earth Sciences. Scientists work with petrology, palaeontology and geophysics.

Place B: N56 10.021; E10 12.314
B=Number of auditoriums - if you're visiting the cache outside opening hours, we suggest you search a bit on the internet. If you're visiting during opening hours, remember to go inside and enjoy the beautiful 600 m2 painting by Per Kirkeby!
At Place B, you will find where the International GIS-day (GIS=Geographical Information Systems) is to be celebrated a day early on Nov. 18 2008. A meeting for all interested in geography – see more at (visit link)

Place C: N56 10.071; E10 11.916
C=Number of ventilation ducts visible from this point
At Place C, you can wave your hands at another part of the Department of Earth Sciences – geomorphology!

Place D: N56 09.975; E10 11.947
What is the number of the Biology-building?
1539: D=6; 1540: D=4; 1541: D=9
Here you’ll find people working hard at memorizing botany and zoology, but also – and we find this a lot more interesting: biogeography!

Finishing line:
N56 (B+C).(A^2+B^2+C^2+D^2)+(A*B)+D;
E10 (A+B).((A+B+C+D)*(B+C))–((2*C*D)+C)

The last two places are not important for solving the geocache, but a must see for real GIS’ers.

Place F: 56 10.329; 10 11.270
If you just can’t help yourself, this place is also of great interest for people who love GIS. At the Computer Science department a lot of computer geeks and nerds love to tweak computers into munching huge amounts of geographic data really really fast. We deducted it from the geocache solving, as it would have taken you out on a longer trip…

Place G: 56 05.264; 10 13.985
But that is nothing compared to how far we would have taken you on this one. At the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics, geographic data and analysis is widely used in digging up the past.
