Geocache Description:

Thinking of memories on the lake

Imagine the late 1970's. My father drove his International Scout down the fire road with ruts so deep the vehicle tips precariously from one side of the trail to the other. The rocks exposed from years of run-off and use bounce us further down the road. It is mid-January and there is little snow, but it has been cold enough to make the lake safe.

As we neared the end of our journey my father would pull the scout right up to the edge of the lake and begin unloading the ice-fishing gear that he had inherited from his father. Quickly, he would have the wooden ice-traps unloaded and a fire roaring out on the ice. "But dad, the ice is going to melt." No it won't was all he said.

Then the others started to arrive after having smartly hiked in from the by-pass. Cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, friends of friends. We all put on our skates and forgot about fishing. As a matter of fact, I don't ever recall catching a fish.

But we played hockey, cooked hot dogs, drained the hot chocolate thermos, and Don's old black lab pulled us in our sleds around the ice.

I have grown up on and around this lake and it holds memories like water--deep and lucid. Lost anchors and forgotten people all come back as the water laps the shore. My wife and I are teaching our children to enjoy the lake by making it a regular part of their lives.

As you search for the cache enjoy the location. My daughter caught her first fish in August right where you are standing. If you fish, the ends are better than the middle and if you're brave and sure footed, out on the rocks is much better.

If the weather is good, bring a picnic. Watch the sunset.

On to the cache. It is a typical lock-n-lock. The final resting spot was chosen by my wife and oldest daughter. What a time they had. I'm surprised they both made it out alive. It requires a little bit of bushwacking.

FTF can have a dollar, but if you don't need it leave it for someone who does.

One thing I do request when signing the log, share your most vivid memory of the lake.
