Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

We always enjoy running into other geocachers on the trails and decided that it would be nice to have a cache that guaranteed meeting someone... so here it is!

The goal of this cache is to have a mix of newbies and oldies meet up. In order to log the cache, you must team up to find it. The criteria for the composition of the team is that it must include:

- one geocacher with less than 100 finds,
- one geocacher with 750 or more finds, and
- one geocacher with over 100 or more but less than 750 finds

A 'geocacher' is a single geocaching user account. So in our case, although we have a family of 4 geocachers, we count as a single geocacher for the purposes of this cache.

A few more conditions...

- if there are more than 3 geocachers, then a new 'team' must be formed to log the cache (ie. each find must happen in groups of threes).
- you can't participate in a team more than once. This is to ensure that not always the same people are called upon to find the cache and to maximize the socialization aspect of this cache.

The cache setup contains a single redirect in the form a waypoint projection and digital roots which we hope will be simple enough for the oldies but teach the newbies some tricks with their GPSr. The FTF prize is some Tim Hortons certificates... maybe the first to find team will want to plan to go out for coffee afterwards!

OK, now that the rules have been established, meet at the posted coordinates where you will find a sign. Memorize the bird calls of these birds listed on the sign: pileated woodpecker, yellowthroats, and white-throated sparrows. This will be important later.

Then use the sign to calculate the following:

Distance in metres = Types of vascular plants found in Stony Swamp - Number of native vascular plants + Number of bird species + 28
Bearing in True North = Digital root of the substance that seals the jack pine cones + 60.142
Note: we only had an accuracy of 10m when taking the readings, but hopefully the encoded hint will help you if you have troubles finding the cache.

Project along the distance and bearing to get to the cache (the last 50m takes you off the trail). As you approach ground zero, each team will have to make one of the bird calls you memorized. This will keep muggles in the vicinity convinced you are just whacky birders and get the birds to help you find the cache. We suggest you also bring bird seeds to feed the chickadees... the attached photo is proof that these birds are excellent gps navigators and their help may be invaluable on your quest.

Hint:
If you go to the Canada's Capital Cacher's web site (visit link) there are links to users statistics and a forum section which should help you figure out who you could team up with or post a message asking for team volunteers.

Did this one a while ago as the fourth wheel of a threesome. I had kept the coordinates in my GPS without noting the conditions for logging. Curious, I hiked by the cache on this beautiful Sunday afternoon before the announced deluge of Monday. Dropped a TB and picked up one before realizing once back home that I could not log the find. I guess I will have to assemble a team to go back later. At this point, I would need a newbie and an old timer.

So there were a lot of reason this cache seemed like a good idea when G Fours suggested it to me. The opportunity to get in one last cache before having to head home, getting to meet another cacher and most of all being the inexperinced member of the group, feeling secure that success was assured. Okay maybe I was a bit optimistic on that last point. Despite the not finding the cache, the slightly extended time of the outing, one member slightly injured while climbing over a fence, the possible straying onto private property and the calling in of a ride to get back to the starting point I think it went really well.

EPIC FAIL. There is not much more to add to narcissa's log, so I'll just say this. If there was one thing I should remember from The Binthair Challenge is that math in the field should never be done just once. Oops just doesn't properly describe a mistake that involves needing a ride back to you car.

This is probably the most embarassing and ridiculous DNF log I have ever had to write. I suppose I don't *have* to write it, but I want to be able to look back at this next time I have the urge to poke fun at others for similar mistakes.

G-Fours, The Fool, and I headed out, wee cachers in tow, to do this and one or two others in the general vicinity, at about 3pm.

Now, the cache page states "Distance in metres = Types of vascular plants found in Stony Swamp - Number of native vascular plants + Number of bird species + 28" which is all fine and good except that I stupidly read the minus sign as a plus sign. Without giving away the numbers, I will say only that there is a considerable difference between the correct solution to this equation and the incorrect solution I came up with.

G-Fours and I, both fresh off the Binthair Challenge, headed out with (too much) confidence and neither one of us double-checked the math.

We had a lovely walk, fed chickadees, fed ducks, nearly walked into a deer, and generally had a wonderful time. We found another multi-cache in the area, and the children happily scampered alongside.

Then the sun went down.

Eventually, we found that we had bushwhacked our way into a place we really weren't supposed to be, and could not find a path out. With two tired and hungry children to consider, we decided that bushwhacking 1km+ back to the car was not the best solution. I phoned Greying Jay, who very graciously came to our rescue.

Thankfully, we kept our spirits up pretty well despite the very long walk, the darkness, and the lack of cache. Back at the parking lot, we quickly found out where we went wrong, and we've all vowed to go find the cache together next time we have an opportunity to do so.

But wow, did we ever fail at this one. :(

I've been looking forward to this cache for a while, and there wasn't a better time to find it than during GAG14! 'Belle, Zoodamar, graciious and I found the required info, did the calculations which gave us nearby final. I gave graciious a short lesson on projecting waypoints with his Oregon, and then we were off. We had a nice walk along the great trails, talked about our GAG14 so far, and then found the cache.

Thanks for the fun cache!

The visit by our emergency-standby-grandkids AlicePoppet and 4wombats gave sagelily and me the perfect geogang to bag this cache by its rules. The kids did all the brainwork, adn then used their keen eyesight to bag the prize. Took the Deutschland geocoin and left a happy little clown. SL. Many thanks for the teamwork-inducing idea behind this one, and its execution.

A fun, soggy romp with BrianDiane and our visiting friend AlicePoppet. She's the one whose younger eyes finally "saw it" for us in Binthair's DOUCIT. Took Tumbleweed coin, left Dora luggage tag. The woods were perfectly empty. Thanks for taking us there!

Unfortunately I only had the coordinates to the sign and the 'three' requirements. We searched all around the sign looking for a cache with no luck. We only found out about the other info required once we got home. Unfortunately I live in Moncton so I won't be back for a while. Cribgenie, newbie CdnChristian and myself are disappointed but posted a picture anyway. TFTH.

Finally! When I first saw this cache, I thought I would never be able to log it. There was no way I could meet at a certain time with others as it's a bit far from home. It lied in the GPSr for a long time.

Recently, I met the cache owner who told me I still hadn't found his cache. When thozil's family and mine looked for a place to spend the afternoon, I proposed Stoney Swamp (and this particular cache). As thozil is still under 750 finds, it was the best moment to try it out.

We walked from the Lime Kiln parking lot and had a nice trip around. We weren't sure which trail to take from the posted coordinates, but in the end, we came to the right place anyway.

Took nothing and left a geocoin.

Well, it would seem that we got shuffled around by bluelamb's nearby cache and found this one instead. We were really quite a bit shocked at this find since it was not on our to do list at all, knowing full well that we were not accompanied by anyone else to fulfill the logging requirements. We did sign the logbook to prove we were there, but we'll have to save our "found it" log for another day, when we have the appropriate company.

The cache is in great shape though.

whew... almost forgot to log this one! (glk and blue_western_star would have given me a hard time about that!

We'd been talking about doing this one for some time, but life sometimes gets in the way of our best-laid geoplans. Anyhow, the stars finally aligned when we found ourselves hiking in the area with our cub pack this week!
An easy find, and we used this opportunity to further initiate these 17 cub scouts to the fun of geocaching.

Woo Hoo...

I'm finally able to log this one... The day it was published, it became the closest unfound cache from my home. That day, I decided I'd set my goal on finding this cache as the 'senior' cacher with more than 750 finds. I had 452 finds when it was published. Further, I gave myself 1 year to be able to post the find.

Well, I met the first half of the goal, passing the 750 mark last October. I then just had to assemble the team to go get it. There were a few friends that I figured I'd go out with to grab it, but it seemed like we could never line up a time that worked out for all of us.

That time finally came tonight. We decided to take our cub group out for a night hike around the Jack Pine trail. I'd introduced the cub pack to geocaching a few months ago and the kids seemed to like it, so when I asked them tonight whether they'd like to simply hike or find a cache as well, the decision was almost unanimous in finding a cache.

We set out down the trail with 5 cub leader, 17 cubs and a few parents in tow. When we got close to the point of leaving the trail, I led the charge with the whole group in tow. The cache had no chance at not being found with that many people searching and it came up as an easy find.

We made no trades but the cache is in good shape. If anyone needs help on this one, there is quite the geotrail leading to it. Hopefully the next snow will obscure our tracks shortly.

I'm logging this with pbaril (100-750 finds) and Blue Western Star (1 find, well actually he's found a few with us before but never logged them. I badgered him into making sure he logged this one). There were a couple other cachers in the group, but they'll have to pass on it right now based on the rules to log.

Thanks for the fun cache.

Had a great opportunity to meet two new cachers today from work... DCMG and Keops2008. We saddled up and headed out to grab this cache with our series of GPSr. Grateful that DCMG did the correct projection, as I'm still fumbling with my new GPSr, and my projection was ~70m out (!?): that's quite a search radius. Signed log. Swapped TBugs.
Thanks for setting this one up - we now have a list of 7-8 caching co-workers!

#100 ONE HUNDRED!

Did this one during lunch with DCMG and GEOPIEL. I was waiting at 99 finds until we were able to put a group together.

Nice meeting Geopiel and learning of the number of cachers physically close to me!

The birds that came up to us while we were logging our find were awesome. It seemed as if they were used to people being around there! :-)

Out today on a lunch time run with Keops2008 (100), and Geopiel (>750). Keops2008 and I know each other from work and located another willing co-worker that met the criteria. Nice to meet you Geopiel.

We gathered the required info, and Geopiel and I both projected the GZ (Keops2008 only having a Nuvi had to wait for the coords). We compared results, but were not as close as we thought we would be. Geopiel having a new GPSr (nice!) wasn't too sure about how to project on it, but we were both in the general area, so off we set.

My GZ came up first so we headed in and I quickly located the cache T TB, L GC
TFTC and the chance to meet the person behind the names

Went out and found the cache with MAPSIT and AJ the Explorer today. After finding the cache, we spotted a rather large pileated woodpecker nearby, which was rather cooperative in having its picture taken. I'm pretty sure this was quite convincing to the group of muggles that came upon us while I was taking the pictures that they were seeing a group of birders. Also included in the local wildlife seen were a few red squirrels, a multitude of chipmunks, and several minimuggles enjoying the wonderful day. All said, this was a quite enjoyable cache.

To those who are wondering where I've gone, I'm still around and caching, I'm just not logging online much. I do check emails and still maintain my caches.

I found this cache with Camo-crazed and MAPSIT. I practiced the bird calls and I helped read the signs to get the numbers for the calculations. Camo-crazed found the cache. I saw a pileated woodpecker (the same one that makes one of the calls I learned), and got to feed some chickadees and chipmunks. I took a green key chain. MAPSIT signed the log for us. Thank you for the cache.

#1505: I liked the looks of this cache and put together a team for it consisting of AJ the Explorer (less than 100), Camo-crazed (more than 100 & less than 750). We all learned the bird calls, though fortunately it was muggles rather than the birds we had to convince. AJ the Explorer is getting pretty good at reading, so she helped gather the necessary information. I got to handle the calculations, and Camo-crazed used the great eyes of youth to spot the cache while I was still wandering around waiting for my GPSr to outsmart the signal sucking cedars. What with all our laughing at the lack of quality in our bird calls, we might well have attracted some muggles, but but somehow didn't. Left a TB, took a plastic rat, signed the log. While getting ready to go back to the trail, we noticed a pileated woodpecker, undoubtedly more attracted by the prospect of bugs in a nearby birch tree than by the quality of my bird calling. Camo-crazed took its photo, which I'm including in the gallery. On the way out we ran into LOTS of wildlife, and AJ the Explorer took the opportunity to feed the chickadees and some chipmunks. Great idea, great cache, THANKS!

#510. Daveyk and I met up with 3Chercheurs today to make a go at this cache. I had done a bit of gooling to come up with the answers... but they were readily available at the posted. Doing the projections ahead of time meant we didn't need to do them in the rain. The hike in was wet, wet, wet and it was a quick find. We each rescued one of the 3 TBs/GCs in the cache. Nice premise for a cache... and it worked as intended. thanks.

If you post it, they will come! Left a note here after having found the cache by inadvertence and thanks to that, I received an invite to rysiuk and Daveyk to participate in their trio. We could have picked a better day weather wise but I’ve cached in worse monsoons than this. It absolutely poured all the way in and all the way back, our coords for the final were very close, I having used the sign and they having used Google. Glad to get this one off the list. We rescued a bunch of TB’s and a geocoin that had been here for a little bit. Your original intent worked and we wind up with a new caching friend. Thanks to all for the fun. I took the GC LNSL TFTC

Hmmm, did we just sink to a new low? I can't believe we sat there watching the others do all that math when we knew the final location so that we could log our own cache! *very evil grin* But the point of this cache was to meet other geocachers and to teach/learn and we did all of that... it was fun to meet portera whose "South Nation Sojourn #5 - Are You Nuts?" cache we'd previously gotten an FTF on and RitchieD who we've recently received a couple of geocoins from and whose "Let's go Snowmobiling" cache gave Adelie a chance to gloat over Rockhopper recently. We learned that this cache is not dog friendly (not having a dog, it was not something we'd noticed), that when you place a cache in winter you don't really know whether poison ivy will grow in the vicinity in the summer (ya,
depending what route you take... watch out!), and that "more than x number of" isn't very precise... but hey, one can assume that x is the number we're looking for! ;-) And Rockhopper got to show off his knowledge of TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms!).

Little Blue was excited to meet a whole bunch of new "pirates" to go treasure hunting with and was very proud to help out with the last cache instruction by pulling out her collection of plush birds that make true to nature bird calls. Macaroni (and his mom) were happy with our make-shift mosquito tent to cover his backpack... we were in a swamp after all!

Thanks to all for the great company! (and thank you Mika for being such a good sport... the one who stays behind in the car so rarely gets any recognition for the sacrifice!)

This was my 100th find and a very pleasant one at that! It was our first team cache.

I packed the family up and we headed off to meet RitchieD and family and Team Penguins Lament. It had been miserable and rainy all day but the weather cleared up nicely.

We found the clues and did the math and I struggled with entering the numbers correctly. The eTrex Legend insists on kilometers for projected waypoints (I think I projected a drive to Oshawa) and a bearing entered as XY0 is not the same as one entered 0XY. Fortunately (I was the newbie after all) I got straightened around, and we were off. This was our first cache in the Stony Swamp area, and it certainly will not be our last.

We dropped the Ottawa Currency GeoCoin and picked up The Prime Ministers Travel Bug.

Somehow with all the Geocoin admiring going on I discovered a Guitar Geocoin in my bag when we got home. Curses! I will wait until it's logged in then I'll log it as being with me, and move it along.

Thanks to everyone for the company and thanks to Team Penguin for the cache. Thanks as well for teaching me what UPS means... Turns out it has nothing to do with parcels.

I got picked-over the night everyone else went back in November (not enough newbies to make enough teams), so I was really excited when Pilgrimofthemind put out a call for an "experienced" geocacher to go out with RDoug and himself.

Well, we certainly picked a bone-chilling late afternoon to do this one. We had no problems finding the information we needed on the boards, just a slight problem initially with simple arithmetic. Once we got the numbers straight, and made our projections, we "flocked" together and headed to the "nest" on a nicely packed trail.

As we approached GZ we made our selected bird calls, and our newbie RDoug made quick work of finding the cache.

We found the cache with little trouble though and were all glad to get this one off our lists.

The question I have though, is whether or not I can log it again as a cacher with 750 finds! LOL. I have a long ways to go...

I am interested in getting a team of 3 together to complete this cache sometime this week (Thursday is best).

I have myself with 100-750 finds and a friend (RDoug) who I introduced to Geocaching just recently with 22 finds.

This leaves us needing someone in the over 750 finds category. If anyone watching this cache who hasn't logged it yet with over 750 finds is interested in grabbing this with us, let me know.

Well that was a lot of fun... glad we decided to drop off Little Blue at her grandparents so we could join the mob. Thanks to everyone who came out, especially for not lynching us for our mistake in the formula. On the way there I remarked to Rockhopper that I hoped there wasn't anything wrong with our cache setup since we'd only done our own QA and had never asked a third party to beta test. Rockhopper reminded me that Aldy, Model12 and LisaMay had already found it so it must be ok... well apparently the FTFers are capable mind readers and did the correct calculation without ever noting there was a mistake in the instructions. *grin* We've corrected the mistake (I think... I admit to being sleep deprived these days which is probably what caused me to make an error in the first place, although sleep deprivation was also the reason we simplified the cache setup... in our original version there was going to be a further constraint that the find numbers of the teams would have to add up to fall into a specific range... *Evil grin*).

Anyway, we were pleased that the objective of the cache seems to have already been met... socialization, how to do digital roots (ok, this time it was how NOT to do a digital root!), how to do a waypoint projection, and how to look and sound like an absolute fool in the middle of the woods (my personal favourite part of the cache!)

Thanks to Blue Lamb and hidnseek for their round-up of cachers and organization of teams as well as to all those who attended (including Aldy and model12 who made a second visit to have fun with the penguins laughing at the 'birders'). Sorry to those who didn't get picked to make a team... but it sounds like there's still lots of interest out there from people who couldn't make it this particular night and we hope to see your 'found' logs
soon! :)

Being a neo-cacher, I was grateful to be teamed up with Mudlark and Esiban. Their knowledge and experience ensured that we were able to find the cache in no time. Ok, that and the fact that there were about 20 of us and had only to follow the very stomped-on path.

We did listen carefully for the various bird calls to be had on the trail; strangely, most of them sounded like "it's over here!" and "we got it!".

The weather was not the best for driving (yes, that was me going 40 down Moodie) but excellent for caching. No trouble finding our way out of the woods either; just followed Charlie the official geo-dog and his red-strobe collar. (Mind you, after posing for umpteen pics on the snowy ground, i was chilled enough to wish the "strobe" was really a "Stroh's".

Had a great time at this impromptu GAG; sorry I missed the dinner - will try to make it next month.

Was lucky enough to be selected from the numerous cachers in the 100-750 find group to find the cache after the Meet 'n Eat. It was an honour to team up with Mudlark and Cat-the-Rat and work together with the impromptu mob to find this cache.

Found with the post-meet&greet crowd! My official group was with Pr. Packrat (over 750) and PuppyJinx (under 100), as determined by lady luck.

It was great fun and a wonderfull evening to be walking in the snow... so much that some of us stayed for a bit more caching afterwards.

I took a couple of TBs that were making it impossible to close the container.

Thanks!

What a great concept. With the 18 + that attended after the CCC meeting there was lot's of meeting new cachers and comaradery! Great night for the walk in the woods, too! I took a flashlight and left a kids pen and a key clip. TFTC!

What a great cache idea! Thanks to hidnseek and The Burrow for ensuring that this directionally-challenged East-ender newbie actually found the right parking place! OK - so it might be time for the Fellowship to start exploring the western side of the city...

And I can't be 100% certain of course, but I'm fairly sure that none of my birdcall renditions would fool anyone!

I was lucky to have my name drawn, unlucky not to have my ride drawn though (sorry cavecats). But my team said they would get me there and they did even though I had to help the newbie (bling bling, lady bling or FOTB) direction wise to get there. we lagged in the rear to make sure no one got lost. Great after dinner cache.

Found at 20:30, I think. What a geomob and a perfect way to cap off the monthly meeting. It was great to team up with Paddling Grandpa and Greying Jay on this one but once at the starting point, it was just one big happy and fun mob. It would have been really funny if the NCC police had shown up and joined in.

My first winter night cache! And what a party it was! I was nominally teamed with dadndaughter and Paddling Grampa, but with this many people, it was more or less one gigantic meet-n-greet the whole way down. This is a great idea, and combining it with the CCC event was even more interesting!

We enjoyed a nice walk in the snow - almost a perfect night for it, with light fluffy flakes coming down, a moonlit sky, and about the best temperature one could ask for on a winter caching night. Luckily I actually remembered to buy a flashlight for the occasion, too!

I took nothing and left a bouncy eyeball (to the surprise of nobody, apparently).

First geomob find and what a time it was. Snow was lovely coming down in the dark and thanks to Bibbits and Canadian Monkeys and the rest of the mob the find was quick & easy.
Love the atmosphre of the whole event.

What a great time, Penguins you sure get the community together!
It sure was fun walking the trails of Stoney Swamp with 30 + other cachers (and Charlie) in a little snow storm at night! I think our team made a little error on the math but hey 'We followed the geotrail!'

What a great night for geocaching!!! This was our first group outing. We were lucky to be among the chosen few to find this cache after the meet and greet. Kids were very excited about being on BlueLamb's team...they have seen his name and picture quite often. Along with Bluelamb, we found this one with Obstacle Man. Thanks for the teamwork!!! We all look forward to another group adventure!!! Hope to see you all another time. Thank you Penguins for setting this one up - perfect timing with the monthly meet and greet!!

Got it at 2015 hrs with Obstacle-man (46) and the GeoAventuriers (322)! Oh, and about 30 other crazy cachers!

The name picking at the CCC Monthly Meeting event went well, but with only six under 100 find cachers willing to tramp into the Stony Swamp there were bound to be some disappointment! I got lucky and was the last name picked! WOOT!

Our convoy soon filled the parking lot at the Jackpine Trail and we were soon gathered round the information board checking out the numbers needed. Many thanks to Model12 and Aldy for correcting an error on the cache page that had us confused for a moment. With the bearing and distance derived we then had a little lesson on projection, the difference between magnetic and true north, and the different screens of the Garmin MAP60 (thanks again Model12). Then my team lead the charge down the trail. I spotted the cache and the two younger GeoAventuriers pulled it out for us! We were the first of tonight's GeoMob to sign in! Thanks for the interesting cache find experience everyone!

I took the Geocacher's Day GeoCoin and left the Have a Drink on Me TB and a 'Blue Lamb'. Cheers,

Bluelamb03

#2183 Found it in the dark with hidnseek (735 finds) and Fellowship of the Bling (80 finds) after the monthly CCC event. One would think the woods would be peaceful and quiet at this time of night, but noooo. As we approached the cache site we could hear this ever growing cacophany of sound that was threatening to split our eardrums! What with all the pileated woodpeckers, chikadees, owls, roosters, crows, turkeys and other unidentified feathered vocalists, we could hardly hear ourselves think. We proceeded to log our find, feeling like we were being watched from above the whole time. Took a c.t.bill, left a glow-in-the-dark spider, a clip-on lizzard, and the Canada's Prime Ministers TB. Thanks for a super fun cache. The Burrow.

Found it today after the geosocial teamed with Tegiro and Bibbits! Great fun!!!!!!
It was a wonderful evening for caching. The concept for the cache was wonderful. I found it a great opportunity to teach and learn a few aspects of caching that one normally has to stumble upon alone. It really is much more fun to cache with others. Thank you Penguins for a very memorable cache and evening.

Well done Model12, Aldy and LisaMay!

There's only 32 people, at the moment, that satisfy the "more than 750 find" requirement!

I'm recruiting a team even as we speak....

This is just too funny... Usually when LisaMay and I settle for the evening, we are settled! But when Model12 suggested that we go out and get a first to find, it seemed a fitting thing for us to do as a team type thing...
He then told us he NEEDED both of us there - and the premise of the cache was too fun to resist.

Nice walk, full bright moon, LisaMay almost jumped as the owl flew quite low - nice picture of the owl... more talking, walking and finding (that would be me!!) - and then enjoying the fruits of our labor - - a hot Timmy's coffee... and tea!

Great idea for a cache - and given LisaMay had been away for 2 weeks, and I for a month in India - it was a chance for us to socialize again!!!!
ps - even thought it was at night, we did make the sounds!

Whoo hoo!! FTF with Aldy and LisaMay at 2139hrs

I had just arrived home after a 5 hour drive, grabbed a bite to eat and was checking messages when this one popped up. A quick calculation proved that LisaMay had less than 100 finds, Aldy had between 100 and 750, and I filled the final requirement - so off we went.

We arrived at the GZ and found hundreds of footprints all around, of course! While we were grabbing the info another car pulled in so we went dark stealth mode and snuck off. It turns out that it was a carload of alternative recreationalists who enjoy sitting in a vehicle full of thick smoke. Hey, I was getting light-headed - and I was 100 metres away! But I digress...

Info in hand, and chirping dutifully away, off we headed to the calculated GZ. Something flew right past LisaMay in the lead, so we shone a light and found an owl staring back at us from 30 feet away!

Then it was on to the GZ, and after a short search Aldy came up with the find! We signed in, made some trades, then started a campaign of footprint camouflage sure to confound any muggles.

T the FTF certs
L a monkey(!), a sheep, a pig, and a clip & SL
