Por meados do século XX, encontrava-se grande número de canteiros a laborar nas pedreiras de todo o país. Só em Alcains havia cerca de quinhentos. Hoje, porém, são poucos. O custo da mão-de-obra, o apelo da emigração e a mecanização, entre outras razões, conduziram ao declínio da arte.
O Museu do Canteiro, que na sua génese corresponde a uma iniciativa espontânea da comunidade alcainense, formula-se agora como uma instituição autárquica, vocacionada para estudar, preservar e divulgar as práticas e as vivências do trabalho do canteiro, em qualquer espaço ou tempo, sem limites geográficos ou históricos, acentuando a consciência de que os canteiros de Alcains são parte integrante da aventura civilizacional que é a relação do homem com a pedra.
Este Museu acalenta também a ambição de manter operativas as técnicas e os saberes tradicionais para através deles dar respostas às necessidades de conservação e de restauro do património edificado. Neste trabalho, a perícia manual, a paciência e a sensibilidade do canteiro readquirem todo o seu valor.

In the mid 20th century, there were a great number of stonecutters working in the quarries all over the country. In Alcains alone there were five hundred. Nevertheless, today there are only a few. The expenses with the workforce, the appealing emigration and mechanization, among other reasons, led to the decline of this art. The stonecutter museum, created by initiative of the Alcains community, today is part of the autharchy. It is a place for the study, preservation and divulgation of the work and experiences of the stonecutter anywhere and any time with no geographical or historical limits, showing that the stonecutters in Alcains play a important role in the adventure of civilization that is the man relationship with stone.
The aim of this museum is to keep the traditional techniques and knowledge active so as to respond to the conservation and restoration needs of the building patrimony. This stonework shows the value of the stonecutter's craftsmanship, patience and sensitivity.
