An easy cache for the traveler on this shortcut between US-95 and US-395, with good, safe pull-out parking well off the highway, big rig semi/RV friendly, about 7,120' elevation
Container is a well-hidden small water bottle in a very good location to ponder this erie, modern ghost town. Cache has logbook, pencil and several newly purchased geoswag all with an American flag theme, consistent with "America's Patriotic Home" in the town of Hawthorne, NV to the north.
The Montgomery Pass Hotel and Casino, Boundary Peak Motel, and the rest of the modern ghost town of Mount Montgomery is just E of the actual Montgomery Pass summit (7,167'). There are no services here, all buildings are vacant, either boarded up or open, but posted no trespassing, except there is a highway department facility to the SW.
Talking to the CA Agriculture Station agent down at Benton, CA just over the NV line, he thought the casino and the town of Mount Montgomery dried up 8-9 years ago.
There are great views of NV's highest point, Boundary Peak, 13,140', and CA's Montgomery Peak, 13,441', with the NV/CA border right between them. To the N are the historical locales of Basalt and Candelaria.
It’s also a good place to reflect on the temporary nature of man’s creations, versus the permanence of rugged mountain peaks, rarely trod upon by man.
