Geocache Description:

I get a little stir-crazy each winter, and this is my third annual trek to this area to hike in the snow and place a cache. This one sits at the top of a sheer cliff, overlooking Good Water Canyon and the Little Grand Canyon.

This was a fun little hike. My round-trip total was 5 miles, and that included a little bit of back-tracking and some sight-seeing. It was a lot of fun in the snow, but it would be a great hike anytime of year except in the dead of summer. The Navajo sandstone cliffs and a little Ponderosa pine forest make it a very scenic journey, but the view from the cache takes it all.

I parked just off the main road at N 39° 06.836' W 110° 42.567'--any vehicle can get to this spot except when it's really muddy or snowy, in which case you'd need a 4x4. About a third of a mile southwest of those parking coordinates, you'll reach a wooden fence at N 39° 06.645' W 110° 42.751', and you can park here if the road's not too bad for your vehicle.

Hop the fence and go a bit farther southeast down the old ATV trail until you get to N 39° 06.567' W 110° 42.698'. At this point, leave the trail and head south cross-country. Stay just to the east of the cliffs that rise up, then follow the base of the cliffs around to the west until you reach the Ponderosa pines. Go to the west end of the small pine forest, then travel south again and scramble up the Navajo sandstone cliffs to the top at N 39° 06.386' W 110° 43.438'. From there, it's relatively flat the rest of the way to the cache--just head directly west and then curve to the south, following your GPS.

One word of caution--the cache is just a few feet down off the edge of the canyon, and requires you to stand on a ledge to retrieve it. The ledge isn't terribly narrow, but it's not extremely wide either. See themagwheel's log regarding the matter, and also here is a picture that I took when I placed the cache showing the ledge. Most people who make the hike in should have no problems with getting the cache.
