Geocache Description:

It’s Not Easy Being Green

But what a life he had! And Dr. Ezra Green accomplished quite a bit in his 101+ years of it. In addition to being the first Postmaster of Dover, New Hampshire, most notably he was appointed surgeon of the ship-of-war Ranger under the command of John Paul Jones during the American Revolutionary War.

Ezra Green was born in Malden, Massachusetts on June 17, 1746. After he graduated from Harvard College in 1765, he concluded his study of medicine and surgery and settled in Dover, New Hampshire, where he established a successful practice. After the battle of Bunker Hill, Dr. Green joined the American army in the capacity of surgeon where he served for 18 months. In October, 1777, he accepted an appointment as surgeon of the continental ship-of-war Ranger, then fitting out in Portsmouth, NH. Here in Dover, he was made deacon of the First Congregational Society in Dover and was a “most devout, unfailing attendant on all Sunday or week day religious services, despite the adverse weather of severest cold or snow of winter, or scorching heat of summer.” In 1827, with many others of similar religious belief, he withdrew from the First Congregational Church to form the first Unitarian Church. In the various affairs of the town he took a lively interest, and under his charge the first school-house was built.

This four-stage puzzle multicache is a tribute to Ezra Green and his very full century here on earth. At the final cache location, there exists a safe created from an original U.S. Post Office lockbox. Use the information gathered at WP1, WP2, and WP3 to open the safe at WP4.

The combination lock on the safe is similar to the one pictured below. Notice that each letter is centered under a particular notch. In this example, the combination is H + 1 notch, L + 0 notches.

Waypoint 1
N 43° 11.575’
W070° 52.608’

Hours: Mon.-Tues. 9am-8:30pm, Wed.-Fri. 9am-5:30pm, Sat. 9am-1pm (9am to 5pm during the school year), closed Sundays.

Random House Webster’s Unabridged, 2nd Edition (Hardcover)

During the Revolutionary War, the Americans devised various ways to encode messages in order to foil the British enemy. The code employed at WP2 and WP3 is based upon a code developed by John Jay and Arthur Lee. At this waypoint, you will locate the key to the code. Decode the messages below in order to build the combination to the safe.

Waypoint 2
N 43° 11.163’
W070° 52.346’

The above coordinates will bring you to the final resting place of Ezra Green. Although he had 13 children with his wife Susanna Hayes, there is a list of 11 children on the back of his tombstone. The following coded message refers to that list and indicates the letters for dial 1 and dial 2 on the combination lock. Note: hours are from 7am to sundown and must be strictly observed. This waypoint requires increased respect and care, since it is within a cemetery, and one of historical significance. Please remain on the avenues until the site is within view; do not walk across other lots to reach the tombstone. The necessary information can be obtained by standing several feet from the stone, and there is no need to touch any of the surrounding objects or structures. Thank you for being extra careful in this sensitive area!

Dr. Green dispatched mail from a house on Silver Street to the White Mountains and to several areas in Southern New Hampshire. This house was Dover’s first Post Office in 1793. The coded message below indicates the number of notches to advance on dial 1 and dial 2 (see example above.) From WP2, head north on Central Ave. and take a left at the lights onto Silver Street. The house is the second one on the right side after the next set of lights, and with the coded message below, you will not need to stop.
