Xorg was looking at an aerial photograph back in the 1980's when he first spotted it. "There's an anomaly here!" he said, and so of course we had to go and find out what it was. Since then we have been back several times, just because it's a great spot.
Best approached from the Waterworks area. Find the memorial seat on the Circle Track, and then look for an obscure track close by. This is the historic Huon Bridle Trail, originally used as a horse trail between the Huon and Hobart. (Was used by Charles Darwin during his visit to Hobart in 1836). Go up here.
Along here you will need to jump over a creek, then the trail becomes more and more obscure. Some scrub bashing will be inevitable, and you might have some trouble with the GPSr due to tree cover. But it's all worth it when you find this spot, where the GPSr will function perfectly. When you are there, have a guess at what the groove in the top might be.
