Geocache Description:

South Peak is just one of several false summits around this part of Montara Mountain, but that doesn’t make it any less challenging…or any less fun! This locality is a treat—off the beaten path with fantastic views of the Rancho Corral de Tierra conservation lands and the San Mateo County coastline. A fitting place for a small cache.

* * * CROSS NO FENCES OR GATES TO REACH THIS CACHE ! ! !

DON’T BE TEMPTED to follow the established roads to South Peak—those roads are within the Peninsula Watershed and under jurisdiction of the San Francisco Water Department.

And besides…proper location of the cache will require a PRELIMINARY STOP AT THE COORDINATES STATED ABOVE. When you arrive, examine the utility pole and locate the nail embedded about 5 feet above the ground and note the 2-digit number (AB) on its head.

Once you’ve got that (and the variables: A and B), then you can use the following equations to fill in the missing numbers in the cache coordinates:

CACHE COORDINATES: 37° 33.RST’ N, 122° 28.XYZ’ W

R = A - 2B
S = B
T = 2B
X = A
Y = B^3 ("B cubed")
Z = A - B

As compared with the other nearby peaks, the vegetation on South Peak is healthy, and the rocks are unique. Poison oak will be your biggest concern, and a few brush-bys are inevitable. WEAR LONG PANTS! Other than poison oak, however, you can enjoy an eyeful of nature that I have not seen elsewhere among these peaks. It’s pretty cool :-)

Enjoy.
